In a continuing debate that was getting a bit off topic..I decided to seperate it and bring it here.
Can the new light weight fighters.. primarily aircraft such as the Gripen, A-50 (and perhaps the single seat F-50), and FC-1 find a market? Especially when the market has older used F-16s, upgraded F-5s, used MiG-29s etc available.
these used aircraft are certainly as cheap.. if not cheaper than the new light weight fighters mentioned..but do they offer more capability..and is it worth it? I recall that the Peruvians managed to get ex Ukranian (or was it Belarus) MiG-29s for as low as 15 mill per unit..
however at the same time..these aircraft are worn out. And in the case with the F-5s.. several of its components are no longer produced today.. further more aged aircraft Do indeed require more maintenance and watching, despite the fact that it once was an ease.
almost all of the new light weight aircraft use a single F404 engine, an effective engine thats still in production and, at least for the Gripen, is very economical and cost saving. The FC-1 is generally assumed to use the RD-93, the improved variant of the RD-33.
market wise, the Gripen has already secured a place with several Eastern European nations and South Africa while the FC-1 will be purchased by China and Pakistan. The Golden Eagle and variants are going to be used by Korea and has been marketted towards the UAE (check previous issues of AFM for pic), and according to sources through ACIG, has caught the attention of Vietnam and Indonesia. (although the former may be unlikely..but the latter has purchased trainers from them before).
