Hi all,
I am currently staying near Abbeville aerodrome in France. (about 30 miles away).
Does anyone know if there is a museum at the aerodrome or nearby?
I should like to pay it a visit.
I have tried to google it and have mixed results.
Kind regards
Gerry

There’s a T6 and a Stampe based at Abbeville, along with a very smart SE5A replica and several HM293 devices. Quite a lot of vintage gliders too.
If you’re a puffer nutter as well as an aeroplane anorak you might visit the Chemin de Fer de la Baie de la Somme. Tremendously fun and can be combined with a good (i.e. hydraulic) lunch.

Cheers all
We plan to go the restaurant at the airfield so will keep an eye out for the display at the same time.

There is a small display of various items relating to the history of the aerodrome at the Aeroclub building, which is next to the restaurant, just behind the fuel pumps. When I was there in May, the display was on the wall to the right of the bar.

We headed out for dinner tonight and drove into Abbeville. Everywhere was closed.
Unfortunately (1) it’s August and (2) it was a weekday evening!

Scroll down a few pages JB for a detailed description of its history, layout etc.

Is the current airfield the same one used in the 39-45 war?
I passed through the city in a train and the first thing I thought of were German fighter units based there.

Wasn’t there an Ouragan as Gate Guardian at Abbeville? Or is it long, long gone?

The town is not exactly the culinary capital of Northern France.
Coming back from Bordeaux earlier in the year we had a couple of hours to kill before our flight-planned departure time, so took a taxi from the aerodrome into the centre. We ended up buying filled baguettes and cakes from a patisserie and eating them (at the owners insistence) in a bar opposite.
Actually it wasn’t a bad solution.

We headed out for dinner tonight and drove into Abbeville.
Everywhere was closed. I was really disappointed.
We did eventually find somewhere to eat near the station at Abbeville but it was pretty poor.
I will try the aerodrome restaurant first.
Many thanks

The airfield restaurant is really top quality. You’ll have an excellent meal there.
If you are around for two days then the Les Routier (transport caff) on the road between the town and the airfield, scruffy though it looks, is a real experience. 14€ / £10.25 for a three course meal including wine (one glass) at lunchtimes. Very entertaining.

I have visited by air quite a few times and have never seen a museum there, but then with no car there isn’t a lot of chance to explore.
The airfield restaurant is cracking good.
