I can see there was a need for the Harrier during the cold war.
However all conflicts since the jet aircraft have not required a VTOL jet Fighter or Strike aircraft.
True, the Harrier was used during the Falklands but this was more a case of having limited carrier ability (cost) than the demands of the combat arena. It has been quoted that a traditional carrier armed with conventional aircraft would have been preferable (but we had scrapped the Ark Royal).
The UK is now purchasing VTOL fighters again, and again because the carrier cost dictates this.
Since the Falklands I can see no conflict which had to use VTOL jets. VTOL Helicopters yes.
Jet sorties have all been from runways. Iraq, Afghanistan et al.
So is VTOL just a function of cost rather than military requirement?
