SPITFIRE MK VB REPLICA
Tuesday, 30 April, 2013On 3rd August 2012, we reported that an inspection of our replica Spitfire Mk VB BL924 had revealed age-related structural problems and that an assessment of the necessary restoration work was under way. This examination indicated damage beyond the Museum’s ability to repair.
At about the same time, it was discovered that the Spitfire Society was seeking a Spitfire replica for mobile display purposes and possessed the required facilities and expertise fully to restore BL924. Therefore, and in view of the Society’s undertaking to retain her existing livery as a memorial to Danish pilot Axel Svendsen of No 234 Squadron who was shot down and killed whilst flying Spitfire BL924 from RAF Tangmere in 1942, a change of ownership was agreed by the Museum and she was collected by the Society on 25th April.
Especially as I believe the family made a sizeable donation towards it on the understanding it would retain the scheme, something that when looking at the first link it is obvious it will not if the replica in the second link is to go by, or is the aircraft simply in for repair and is one of the others the one for Lesotho?

On the 10th January last, I wrote to the Danish Embassy asking for their assistance in locating the family or, any family members or, relatives of Axel Svendsen.
I haven’t had a reply.

“Wasn’t the original forum thread taken down at the request of a third party? “
If it is the thread I remember, that is what I was told- apparently a person or persons at that time unknown got a bit huffy.
The SHT site offers that the replica is a Mk Vb similar to that owned by the Spitfire Society. Since it is cast from it it really ought to be.

Cool thanks for clarifying that, It didn’t help when all the other sites showed it as for Lesotho too, though I did think it might be a mix up in pictures and inferred that in my original post.

Go to home page bealepark.co.uk and click on the link there,
or this which works for me

looks like it’s going to be left outside which seems rather poor.

Moggy,
I’ve tried to access your link several times, even rebooting, but each time I’m told “You do not have permission to access this page“.
Is this correct?

As Moggy pointed out, there was a great deal of confusion over this. I’m afraid that the original www2 Aero link misled with a story accompanying an image which led to the wrong conclusions. This wasn’t helped by some old information which I believe was (then) extant on the Tangmere Museum website and was out of date. I am presuming that this has now been deleted or corrected, but haven’t looked.
As recently as 5 February the Chairman of Tangmere Museum contacted me with an update as he was aware of my keen interest in this because I was instrumental in the donation from the Svendsen family. I am sure he will not mind me quoting him as follows:
“Just to let you know that the refurbishment went according to plan and the Axel Svendsen replica was delivered to her new home at Beale Park, Reading, on Tuesday. I am told that she looks magnificent.”
