Is There Still A Demand For B.A. And B.S.F. Threaded Fasteners?

I hope the mods will be cool with this – it’s about how to dispose of another part of my collection (but it’s not an advert, honest!)

In my years of collecting aircraft parts, I’ve accumulated many thousands (“fahsends and fahsends”) of A.G.S. fasteners, of which nearly all are B.A. or B.S.F. threaded. The majority may be of obsolete specs in terms of flying projects, but this should not be an issue where paperwork is not required.

I’ve far more B.A. than B.S.F. I have most types of head, including round head, hex head, countersunk and mushroom. Most of the screws are in original condition, i.e. plated, and the majority are High Tensile steel. In terms of numbers, I’d say 2 B.A. are the most common, with lesser numbers of 4 B.A., 6 B.A., then assorted B.S.F. in that order. Lengths vary from 1/4 inch to 6 inches. Quantities range from a few, to several hundred of each head type/length. Alas, I have very few nuts before anyone asks, unless there’s a demand for 7/32″ B.S.F. locknuts – I may have cornered the market in those!

I’m pondering how to move them all on. From experience, I could probably take the whole lot to next September’s Beaulieu Autojumble and not bring them back. Alternatively, I could try once more to interest people at the Aerojumbles. It’s just that I find it most irritating to have a bunch of guys, with steel rulers, blocking a good part of the stall for twenty minutes while they weigh up the selection, only to choose two or three 4 B.A. screws, then pull a face when I’ve the temerity to ask for 10p per item.

“I don’t need ’em gold plated!”.

What I was thinking about was a happy medium wherebye the Museum groups, Project teams, individuals with their own projects, etc get to benefit. If, say, I were to divide them up evenly into ten or fifteen “lucky bags”, would you guys be interested in stocking your shelves for a very reasonable cost?

That’s as far as I’ve got with the idea. I’d have to consider what they owe me, how to deliver/collect, etc (probably via the ‘jumbles). I haven’t got the time to list them and don’t really want to be inundated with “I only need half a dozen such and such…” type requests. This is all about moving them on with minimum effort.

Is the interest there in the first place, though, or should I just pack them up for Beaulieu?

Declarations of interest and or alternate suggestions welcomed!

Just a quick update.

The first three “lucky bags” (actually “lucky supermarket vegetable trays” ) are now loaded on the van ready for Newark’s indoor ‘jumble tomorrow. There will be more for Brenzett and Cockpitfest. There will only be twelve though, and when they’re gone, that’s it.

Each has over 2,000 screws plus a small assortment of anchor nuts and p-clips for wiring. If you spot anchor nuts that you know you need in quantity, let me know a.s.a.p. as the remainder will be going soon.

Each assortment is pretty much identical in terms of sizes and quantities, etc.

I’m still deliberating over the price – it will be substantially less than 10p. per fastener though!

Hope to see and chat to some of you tomorrow!

We’re always short of 2BA anchor nuts and 1/4BSF anchor nuts for Bluebird. We can even pay for them nowadays.

Having said I’ve no nuts to include in the “lucky bags”, I’ve reminded myself that I have healthy stocks of anchor nuts of various types, mostly B.A. and B.S.F. threads. Here’s a selection but I have other sizes and types.

I take it there will be interest in these too?

Think you might manage more than 10p an item…………!!!

If anyone wishes to offer 10p per item now, they can have the lot. The final bill will run into four figures though!

Seriously, thanks for the comments and suggestions.

It sounds like there’s enough interest to warrant taking this a stage further.

I’ll keep you informed through this thread, mods permitting.

Don’t forget some companies in the restoration and warbird world do not need paperwork as they can self certify parts as serviceable.

I’ve forwarded a link over to the restoration guys at NAM and asked if they’re interested – thanks for the ‘heads-up’!
