Hi everyone.
This prop has just arrived at our workshop for a customer, and was sold to him as a Hornet propeller.
I always thought they would have had a Hydromatic 4 blader, not a Rotol.
My only other thought was Firefly.
Does anyone know what this is off please?
Cheers
Pete

Many thanks for the details and the photograph Pete. That is one beautiful engine… it looks so different to other Merlins I’ve seen!
Cheers,
Richard

WoW! Isn’t that the series used exclusively on Hornet’s? Any history behind the engine? Very cool indeed.
All the best,
Richard
Yes it is Richard. I think the owner said he had made some enquiries with RRHT, I haven`t heard the results. He is working abroad for the next month, but still has e-mail so I may hear something.
The 134 and 135 were only made in very small numbers, 25 and 45 respectively, most Hornet engines were 130 / 131, the main difference being that the 134 / 135 had a Corliss barrel throttle as in the Griffon 58 instead of a throttle butterfly.
I have attached a photo he sent me after collecting the engine last week. The exhaust stubs are Mosquito!

“PS. Is this a crash-recovered Merlin, or a clapped out one resurrected from the dead?”
Neither, it is a clean good condition stored Merlin 130 series that has the potential to run again after a strip down and re-assembly.
Cheers David, you beat me to it!
In fact it will hopefully only require deep inspection which does not involve much dismantling, although I have yet to see the engine myself.

Many thanks Pete… despite the potential problems, I hope it fits!
All the best,
Richard

Just out of curiosity, what aircraft is/was it supposed to be going on?
Cheers,
Richard
Hi Richard
It is going on a ground-run Merlin 135 which has left-hand rotation.

Many thanks Anne, where would we be without you?!
That answer is not good really, because we are talking about what was supposed to be a complete propeller, and quite clearly isn`t, the hub has a No 5 spline to fit the Merlin (or Griffon) but the Viking should be a No6 spline.
The screw thread on the blade shank does match the hub, but unless we can be certain they are interchangeable then it ain`t going on an engine.
I am slightly annoyed becasue the prop was sold to my customer by someone who has been in this game for decades and knows his stuff, or supposedly does, and a lot of money was paid for it, so I hope it does not throw up any further surprises!

Did someone call?
What you’ve got there is a Vickers Viking blade. There is however a deHavilland connection as the original Rotol list I’ve taken this info from records this blade as having been made to ‘D.H. Planform & Thickness’.
I’ll go and crawl back into my hole now…good trick if you can do it!

Thanks David
We all agree it isn`t Hornet then!

Hi Peter
I have sent you some Hornet prop photos via e-mail.
By: Bruce - 29th March 2008 at 07:36
Indeed – Hornet only used deHavilland hydromatic propellers.
Anneorac usually gets these ones!

David Collins is your man, but no Rotols on Hornets.
