This was found on the edge of Stradishall airfield in the 80’s
I know they had the odd Spitfire there after the war , as you can see there is little hope of retrieving any serial numbers from it. Kevin

A couple were modified as anti invasion aircraft. They had a 20mm canon strapped to the outside of each wheel spat, as well as the .303s within! I think they had a smooth gun button though so yes, Spitfire.
Maybe not as all the pics I’ve seen of Lysander cockpits show this type.

That’s a great local airfield find, Kevin. Looking forward to seeing what else turned up.

Correct about the bombs, they also had a .303 browning in the top of each wheel spat. Looking at the limited space I don’t think they carried a large supply of ammunition. Unless, of course, the ammunition feeds ran up the inside of the U/C leg fairing.

They also had Lysanders up there but I think they were for SOE operations. I know little about the Lysander , I thought they were un armed, although I have an old balsa model of one that seems to have small bombs an the wheel assembly?

It was! Only canon armed Spits and a few Lysanders had that rectangular rocker button.
