dark light

Is this OK ?

Increasingly these days I find myself squeaking ” This is outrageous ! ” whilst almost-21 daughter tells me I’m complaining about nothing. So I’ll ask you guys ; is it acceptable for a celebrity magazine to put a close-up of an unconscious, possibly dead,Michael Jackson’s face on the cover ?

I’ve seen a lot of people die in the course of my work, in all sorts of ways, from the comfort of a bed and a loving family to the most horrific trauma. Each and every death has one thing in common none of them are dignified. We try to dignify the circumstances and the surroundings but the actual act of dying is the most undignified of all.

Rubbish…..
Any death is the single biggest thing every human WILL go through, so if some one leaves this place either kicking and screaming or slips away in their sleep,so what happens with the remaining body (with out getting graphic) is not undignified, its natural.

That’s Iran, China….. and now Vietnam.

You’re racking up quite a body count, old shape. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Remember Princes Diana, did not stop them then, must be distressing for his Children, no matter how he acted in real life, they are innocent in all of this and do not deserve to possibly be confronted with their fathers corpse plastered across the Media.

Their grief was an eye opener to me as I always thought they never saw anything of him.

If the photo was of a Viแป‡t cแป™ng killing a handcuffed Brit or American, then we would have been demanding a nuclear strike….

Disturbing as that is, lets not forget that the Viแป‡t cแป™ng would have no hesitation at doing this sort of thing on a daily basis, and far far worse. They did so too.
Let’s not forget how badly the US soldiers, and the few Brits out there were treated. The error of General Nguyแป…n Ngแปc Loan was to be stupid enough to do it on camera.
Yes, we in the West (And therefore our allies) are supposed to rise above such things. But in War, when the bad guys get dirty, so do we.

If the photo was of a Viแป‡t cแป™ng killing a handcuffed Brit or American, then we would have been demanding a nuclear strike, even in 1968 when the pinko’s were beginning to win some votes.

On topic, yes, that is more disturbing than a picture of Jacko.

The Michael Jackson photo is mild compared to some of the images shown by the media over the years…i remember my kids being absolutely shocked and mortified at witnessing this on TV

General Nguyแป…n Ngแปc Loan (December 11, 1930[1]โ€“July 14, 1998) was the Republic of Vietnam’s Chief of National Police. Loan gained international infamy when he executed handcuffed prisoner Nguyแป…n Vฤƒn Lรฉm, a Viet Cong soldier, on February 1, 1968 in front of Vo Suu, an NBC cameraman, and Eddie Adams, an Associated Press photographer. The photo (captioned “General Nguyen Ngoc Loan executing a Viet Cong prisoner in Saigon”) and film would become two of the most famous images in journalism and started to change the American public’s views on the Vietnam War.[2]

………….None of this makes the photo particularly dignified…but with MJ, that wasn’t the point.
The point was to be noticed and covered in the media.
Watch out what you ask for…you might get it…๐Ÿ˜€

Correct.
And the point of the photograph was to make what, $50,000 for selling it. Probably more.
I would take the picture and sell it to the highest bidder, I’m sure others would.
But like you said, if it was ordinary Joe in an air crash that hadn’t courted media then I wouldn’t take the picture of the body.
However, I snapped away like a possessed Flickr at Fairford 94 when the Ruskies clipped and crashed. And had I not walked all the way back to may car (Up agin the rope at the other end of the runway..in the days when you could park agin the rope) then my shots would have been magic. I had a 500mm lens on at the time and I was disapointed not to get a good sellable shot.

Hmmm.. not sure you would feel the same if it was a display pilot laid out for all to see. There’s enough controversy about showing a crash, let alone a body.!

It’s a different circumstance…display pilots aren’t that famous.
Few people in the world have courted media attention the way MJ did.
Legally, once you seek media attention as a celebrity there is a different standard of privacy protection (at least in US law).

A display pilot would die in a public crash…a legitimate news event. Still no real news organization would print a photo like that of a non-celebrity.
When it comes to display crashes, some would complain about crash photos…or even a shot of the pilot being loaded onto an ambulance.
Sorry people, it’s a legit story.
In my time in the media, I’ve had people object about the most innocuous video, but if you die in a public place…it becomes news.

Still it appeards MJ died in his home…which makes it distasteful.
But the photo shows no blood and officially he was still alive when it was taken (he wasn’t pronounced dead until he was at the hospital).
While the Times may not print a photo taken under such circumstances, we’ve all seen worse. (Like the Iranian woman recently shot, or the Zapruder film of JFK getting his head blown apart. “Quality” media had no trouble showing us those photos.).

None of this makes the photo particularly dignified…but with MJ, that wasn’t the point.

Being laid out tidily at home so people who knew you can pay their respects is fine.Being photographed hooked up to medical equipment, possibly taking your last breath, and having said photo put on the cover of a magazine isn’t quite so dignified .

But do the press not post pictures like that all the time ? Hey how about Neda Agha Soltan you could of watched her die! Sad world we live in.

Can’t say it worries me particularly.

We’ve all got very squeamish about dying (the one activity we will all of us participate in) over the years.

People used to die at home, the dead body would be laid out in the parlour, neighbours would pop around to pay respects.

Today we hide death away. I’m not sure we have it right.

Celebrities who live in the tabloids…can expect to die in them as well.

Jackson planted some of the “weird” stories about him in the tabloids (like the hyperbaric chamber story/photo) to keep in the public eye, so he (or his family) don’t have a lot to complain about.

Somehow, I don’t think he’d disapprove…as long as they spelled his name correctly and he made the front page instead of it going to a pop star rival.
