A noted ebay seller has this: Very unlikely to be off the aircraft as stated, perhaps attached to a post in front of it? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VERY-RARE-ORIGINAL-RAF-VULCAN-BOMBER-ENGINE-LARGE-20INCH-LONG-DATA-PLATE/362226046033?hash=item54565ad451:g:0-YAAOSw8RZabfoE

The listed price has also halved – still along way to drop until it gets to its real value!

Ahem…….I note that the description has now dropped the ‘data plate’ bit!

I suppose the added benefit of mentioning it on this forum (and we all know that NAM frequently check the posts) is that it also helps others who potentially could have purchased this item thinking it was and I quote these words from the advert ‘VERY RARE and ORIGINAL engine plaque’. It’s only through these open discussions that we can find out what it really is, in this case it’s just a bespoke museum display plaque with no real aviation provenance.

I’ve had a shufti at Vongolds “other items” list. What a load of tat. Action Man uniform for £75! Cheap Mamod steam engine though.

Not a problem ian_ it’s brightened up a cold winters night – much as it enlivened the discussions at coffee time at NAM on several occasions in recent times!

Thanks for the confirmation, TO! Glad it entertained, more fun than a pm. That Vongold really doesn’t miss a trick.

As an after thought I have just remembered this photograph of the nose wheel tether on XM594 at Newark and you can just make out the display sign on the chock!
Photo taken 9 August 2005 and that’ perhaps the closest it ever got to the engine on Vulcan XM594.

Wouldn’t a PM to one of the Newark team have been more appropriate?

Thanks for flagging this up, NAM is already aware and to be honest has been having a big laugh about it – not sure how it left the museum, perhaps in a batch of scrap, or a midnight raid on the museum scrap heap during Cockpit-Fest! 😀
The back story is as follows: about 20 years ago each aircraft had a pressed-aluminium display sign that had a few basic details on it about the aircraft. These were eventually replaced as they had become tired & worn – just like the example on E**Y! Such was the amusement at the requested price (they each cost around £20 + VAT to produce) that a frantic search ensued to see whether we had any hidden any where that NAM could use itself for fund raising purposes.
Mindful of the fact that such a price might eventually be paid and the potential mark-up (even with inflation), NAM even check to see whether they might get a few more made, ‘weather’ them into a ‘distressed’ condition and then sell them off at the Aeroboots! :highly_amused:
As ever, a case of ‘buyer beware’ a particularly relevant phrase for everyone to abide by! Certainly very rare and not a Vulcan engine data plate.
