Isle of Man 14/02/2006

In between my two flights today (See trip report http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?p=851020#post851020 ) I had about 4 hours to kill. I was on the IOM with Elgan (bmistar) this time in 2004, and basically it rained all the time and we didnt do much! However the weather was really nice for most of the morning, so I decided I would walk the airport perimiter and see what I could find.

After walking down to Castletown, and onto the beach I saw these steps and thought mischievously of Elgan falling down a very similar set on our last trip:

Little did I know the irony at the time! From the coast road it was possible to see the airfield but I was still some distance from the runway so continued walking round the airport. Eventually I found an excellent spot just past the aero club where you could see and photograph arrivals and departures.

However you have to stand on either a bank of earth or the concrete base of a fence to get good photos. On my descent from the bank of earth I slipped and fell, and got a huge mass of mud down the side of my jeans and my jacket, along with various nasty bruises all over me. Luckily I didnt fall a metre further or I would have been over the edge into the rocks 😮 Instinctively however I protected my camera from damage, thereby causing further injury to myself (but importantly not the camera). No doubt Elgan is laughing hysterically at this point after what happened last time.

Anyway, on with the pictures. As ever no editing so some that might have been salvaged are not in a sufficiently fit state for posting atm:

Departing for Liverpool:

Departing for Manchester:

My ATP departing straight after, presumably also to Liverpool:

Atlantic G-HERM, as seen in DUB on Monday swapping with the ATP as the replacement Euromanx aircraft:

Not sure who this was operating for, or if it was a charter. There was no evidence of Alpha1 in the airport at all so dont think it was for them:

I waited for a while to get this shot, and thought it came out relatively well:

After this I limped round to the other side of the airport, despite the sun being in the wrong place I was able to get one nice shot from a very photogenic location that no doubt improves later in the day as the sun moves round:

And finally whilst waiting in the terminal this interesting visitor came round after arriving from Keflavik following a ferry flight from Duluth, and Goose Bay:

Of course Mark had better weather than you Elgan. That’s because you cursed your week of flying with a trip to The Dark Side Of The Pennines 😀

That is very true Paul 😀

No I was considering it but didnt have much time there really, plus after my mishap I was quite happy not being laughed at in my isolated spot 😀

Mark,

No idea where the Citation was headed. I’m on a course this week and can’t leave my radio on so I don’t hear whats happening. Luckily they park just behind my hangar so I copped this one during lunch!

G-OSPG and G-OLDD in today, parked on Bravo taxiway, perfectly positioned for pictures.

Did you go into the Flying Club for coffee or anything? They do an excellent lunch.

Fantastic! Really nice shots, also the background shots of the Isle of Man are really good. A nice treat for those of us that don’t live in the UK.

I like smaller airports with regional aircraft, or charter destinations, there’s still that sense of occasion for locals with their arrival.

Nice to see someone else take pictures in the Isle of Man. If I’d known you were coming I could have saved you the walk to the flying club 😀

If you are ever across again, give me a yell and I’ll see what I can do.

Heres a pic of N737Rj after it taxiied into the “executive terminal” 😀

Cheers for the offer I’ll bear it in mind!

Any idea where that Citation is headed for eventually?

Nice pics. Always enjoy a shot time in the IOM. Somehow it’s got a cosey “homely” feel to it!

Nice shots of the ATPs – might be in touch to steal one of em!
