Just back from day one of the Isle of Wight airshow and jolly good fun it was too. The Saturday show is more aimed at the fluttery end of the scale and so Jungmans, Jungmeisters, Yaks, UttButts and a host of other things flew and the TFC P40, Hawk 75, P51, Real Aeroplane Co. Hurricane, HAC Spitfire and probably other things I foget were also displayed. It was a tad windy (I stopped by the first turn off!) and I fully intend to go again tomorrow. The Sunday show apparently has even more warbird element.
For me the star of the show was the fine Rearwin Cloudster on the 1930s line up. Oh, and I also bumped into a bloke with a zimmer frame who was mumbling something about Supermarine Stannah Stairlifts.
We nearly got stuck over there tonight (would have been no hardship as Peter Teichman generously offered us a hotel room) but we got back with no worries.
Twas a lot of fun.

My Sandown photo.
I seem to remember seeing a very similar image to this – a Ministry ‘press release’ shot, the Allies working their way up through Italy in 1944.

I nearly went to this one, as I’m originally from the area.
Two things put me off though, the weather and Cowes week.
Looks like there was plenty of room on the crowdline.
Is it an annual event or just a one off?

He is just jealous, after all he could only lay his hands on that P40 . . .

Ah yes the Cloudster, described by one worthy at Sandown as that ‘sort of red Portaloo on its side’.
I was privileged at Sandown to talk to the test pilot of Melve’s Cloudster, who made the first flight. He is reported to have diplomatically replied to the question, how does it fly, by saying – “it does exactly what says on the tin”.
However a little probing into the contents of said tin elicited…

Just got back from the second day. More warbirds, a Bilbao (I know it is wrong but if Jane Larcombe is reading this it will make sense to her) and some more interesting weather on the way home.
The 108 was not there today and there was some nice flying.

Come on guys, I´m 8000 miles away in a Southern hemisphere winter, missing the English summer, the airshows and the 108 flying.
I think she displayed today at Sandown – any pics anyone? Always freaks James out (her jockey today) when I tell him what shirt he was wearing. He hates the internet so has no idea how I´m able to tell him his choice of dress, the weather, who he followed blah blah blah…
Thanks!!
