I found the following in Battle in the skies over the Isle of Wight by H.J.T Leal it gives a little more info.
November 1. The south coast of the Island was enshrouded in sea mist and fog. Cloud level was about 2,000ft. At 1445 hours two Spitfires of No. 616 Squadron flew in from a patrol. They were flying very low and close together when they ran into a bank of fog. Suddenly they flew into the top of Stenbury Down, crashing within 50 yards of each other. One pilot was killed.
Spitfire BR186 616 Sqn Westhampnett F/S P. S. Smith Killed. Stenbury Down
Spitfire BR174 616 Sqn Westhampnett F/S K.Rodger Seriously injured. Stenbury Down
I hope this helps.
