Hi all
a few years ago my wife and I spent a few interesting days in Istanbul.
We visited all the usual tourist places but through other commitments I failed to get to the Turkish Airforce Museum on the outskirts of the city.
Has anyone here ever been to that museum? I’d particularly like to see a photograph of the Grigorovitch M-5 that the museum has. That’s a Great War Russian flying boat captured by the Turks from the Imerial Russian Navy in the Black Sea or any other exhibits.
I know we’ve a few intrepid museum hunters in our congregation (Mike J, Papa Lima) but I don’t think even they’ve made it here.
Anyone??
Cheers
Andy

Museum
I went to the museum a few years back which is located on the parimeter to Istanbul airport. Most of the exhibits are stored outside in the sunny climate. Main thing to remember is that the museum is only open certain days of the week, so plan ahead.

A gentleman in the UK has claimed to all and sundry that he owns two ex Turkish Spitfires and has done so for the past, what would it be, ten years.
When I say claimed, I mean even to the point of taking out space at Shoreham Aerojumble and distributing ‘flyers’ requesting parts and info for the restoration.
As with the ‘list of lists’ type databases, serials for these two have crept into the general domain of the ‘World’s Surviving spitfires’.
Now wouldn’t you think that over that period just one person would admit to seeing them or even a photograph of them?

Don’t get too carried away, we’ve got another little trip to make before we get to planning a Turkey visit 😉
Still, there may be a WWI flying boat on this one too! 🙂
Haven’t forgotten.
I need to buy a 2005 diary very soon. I suspect 2005 will be a very busy year indeed. 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

No sign of the Turkish Spitfire duo while you were there then?
They must exist – it says so in ‘Spitfires and Polished Metal’ by Moss and McKee.

Thanks Mike
The Grigorovitch looks in pretty good shape.
Thanks for finding that.
It looks like they might have some interesting exhibits there.
Thanks for the P-47 picture too Martin.
Cheers
