It is a Spitfire part …but

This part was found among some Spitfire surface wreckage just recently.

It is a steel threaded locking ring, tightend with a ‘C’ spanner.

It has been subsequently bead blasted and there are no visible numbers…strange.

It is definately Spitfire and could be engine related or possibly armament.

Any ideas?

I currently favour this wreckage is a PR Mk IV, hence the armament conflict.

The small piece of ali ‘zed’ section at the lower RH corner, certainly looks to be a bit of bog-standard Spitfire wing L/E skin stiffener.

So yes wing, rather than fus to my eyes.

…another piece of the jigsaw. Some sort of tank entry point with a 2.5 inch dia thread.

Header coolant, oil, hydraulic fluid and de-icer tanks can be ruled out by virtue of the steel. I suspect the steel has rolled up in the crash and it was in fact a flat strip of about 4 inch x 12+ inches.

This dos not fit with Mk V Spitfire to my knowledge, but shout if you recognize it, and I am moving toward a reinforcement in the 18 gallon oil tank carried in the PR IV port wing.

Another possibility is that it is drop tank related.

No, not a knew find but a Spitfire wreck that was first reported forty odd years ago in a very remote place.

I am endevouring to pin an RAF ID on it. There is possibly a ‘missing in action’ pilot angle.

It would make a good story but where would you go to get something like that published in this day and age? 🙂

Rear roller bearing retainer D1994.
It’s easy to confirm because it has a left-hand thread.

Could be the prop shaft rear roller bearing nut, the front one is bronze (except Packards) and has a flange.
I’ll look tomorrow.

Looks just like the Crank. damper retaining nut off a Rolls-Royce V8 car engine!

It looks like a bearing retaining nut. There is a similar nut on the front of the Merlin for the thrust and roller bearing on the prop shaft.
