dark light

It kills me…..Duxford.

For all eyes…

For the third time in the last 5 years I will not be present at DX for that fabulous show, and it takes a little piece of me every time I miss the show…I will miss standing on the hill by the land warfare hall taking photos….the bean and bacon sandwiches over at the vendors….the Instant coffee that makes my stomach gurgle….the feel of a slight rain and apprehension that the show may get rained out …..the sight of Hurricanes and Spits almost as far as the eye can see on the flightline….the even MORE incredible sight of 3 or 4 Corsairs (this is EUROPE after all) on the flightline….seeing old friends from the States and the UK alike (Howard Pardue coming up to me and saying “Boy YOU sure came along way just to say ‘Hi’!)…talking with all the Fine British folks along the flight line whether they like Yanks or not….and when all the incredible flying is over and done with and the Balbo has passed over and Paul Bonhomme or whoever is flying the solo act has finally landed….heading over to the Plough for a Pedigree or Spitfire ale and talking over the day’s events and looking forward to the next day or the next year….

I have my photo albums of the two shows I attended in 2000 and 2001 to keep me company…but it will NOT be the same thing…have a Great Legends, take PLENTY of pics and share them with us less fortunate….and I will be thinking of ALL of you from this forum and friends that I have over there who will be attending the show and covering it for the rest of us who are ‘distance and financially challenged’….I’m RIGHT THERE with you in spirit, gang. Have a great show….I’ll BE THERE next year.

From Colorado, USA…

Mark

Vancouver – go to Langley (You know, like the CIA base) where you’ll find a complete (sort of) HP Hampden… Canadian Museum of Flight. Have a Google.

Hi Mike,
Lots of aviation in Canada. Where are you going? (And how’s your French?)
Cheers / Salut

Vancouver and The Rockies, just as well really as the limit of my French is bon jour/bon nuit but at least I know what they mean 🙂

I’ll be missing Legends this year as the nasty W word has got in the way plus we’re busy saving up some spending money for our holiday to Canada in Oct. The holiday is paid for but need some money for the obligatory souvenirs for the family and a few beers whilst we’re there. I’ll be sorry to miss the show but I can’t have everything much as I might like to!

Hmmmm….sounds strangely familiar….last time at Midland, the weather was cold and windy and rainy, and the IWM contingent a friend of mine and I were hanging with were heard to say that if they wanted weather like THAT they could’ve stayed HOME!!

Oy….totally missed the post on Colorado/Midland….all i can say is Midland, TX is totally acceptable….as long as there are Warbirds there. Otherwise….you might as well be standing in the midst of the biggest, flatest, most desolate, uninhabited area on the planet. There is nothing there…and from Colorado, it is a 16 hour drive to the show (an overnighter for us…Literally) for the CAF show in october….one which, god willing and the creek don’t rise, I will be driving to for the first time in about 4 or 5 years this october. As for Colorado…well, y’all gots to come out here to see for yourself what THIS place is all about…Beautiful mountains 14,000 ft high, great skiing, 80 and 90 degree days, 300 days a year of sunshine, dry heat with NO humidity (the best kind)…a great place to live and GOOD fishinmg…trout of all kinds. Texans love it….it TOTALLY does’nt look like Midland!

Mark

Oh, okay, but I only mentioned Midland as the CAF is based there. I know many preferred Harlingen, but ANYWHERE that has good weather right now would be better than Duxford for flying warbirds! We’re currently have the worst weather ever and today was announced as the coldest July day on record! 😮

Robbo et al-

A most generous offer…but I have to say that what you guys and girls put up here, together with Ben Roger’s site, usually covers it enough to give everyone a pretty good idea of what is/was going on at DX during the show, who flew what, what showed up…that and a few ‘spies’ that I am in communication with (one an assistant magazine editor for the Key publishing group) always keep me informed of the haps over there…so I would’nt really need or use the CD, even though it is a VERY generous offer and maybe someone else will take you up on it.
Again, many thanks!

wishing Legends migrated to Midland, Texas!!

That would only be acceptable if we all migrated there too.

I happen to like Colorado (See Here). How far is it from Midland?

Perhaps those that can’t make it won’t feel so bad, when we all get soaked to the skin at Duxford with this disasterous weather we are having and wishing Legends migrated to Midland, Texas!!

Ditto – if I get anything worthwhile.

I may also do a video of some of the event which I can share on DVD.

This could become the tread of those who feel sad because they can not attend The Legends show at DX. In that case, i’ll sign in here. 🙁

Yes, joining the Virtual Legends team. Still I’ll console myself with some other rare and historic aircraft…

Hey 166, what a sad but heartfelt message. I live alot closer (Northern Ireland) but because my work has taken me away from my family this year, I need to put them first during the Legends weekend – so I’ll also be missing out.

Believe me, there are quite a few of us over the water who, for one reason or another, will be unable to attend. We, like you, rely on the goodwill of the generous community on this forum to ‘take us’ to the show.

Thanks in advance all you posters – it means alot to us!
