Just walked out of the dry cleaners in the centre of Bury St Edmunds to be greeted by the neck-prickling sight and sound of a Spitfire howling across the town at 501 feet.
Only caught a glimpse against a strongly lit sky, but it looked like all PRU blue with invasion stripes under the wing.
Luverrly 🙂

Lucky you! 😀
I expect they were the 4 Duxford Spitfires returning home from Shoreham.

Whats happenned just now has set me up for the week!!
It’s a beautiful afternoon, hot and sunny, was it like this in 1940, anyway, I was out the back thinking about all those BoB airshows that used to be on this weekend, Newton, Syerston, Waddington, Cottesmore, Finningley, alas no more.
I thought I was being passed by in terms of anything relevant to those events from 1940, then the sound of the tourists cars was drowned out by an almighty roar as 4 Spits in close formation hammered over the village, what a sight. I ran out the front and was quite bemused to see cars pulling over and people jumping out for a better view, bliss.
What is also amusing is that there seems to be some sort of police op going off, there are cars hiding everywhere and the Essex police helicopter is quartering Bardfield, I bet those Spits gave him a fright, 2 either side I hope, pity my missus was off shopping and missed it, mind you, following my earlier thread, it was a great sight to see her sitting outside reading up on Defiants this afternoon, death traps she reckons.
Don’t forget, 18:00, ITV tribute to Steve Irwin, another great character taken from us recently along with the late great Raymond Baxter, can you see those two getting on somewhere in the ether? ‘Allo mate, course you can fly a Spitty with a croc in the back seat, it’s all down to inertia, mate’.

I beleive the Spitfire described by MOGGY C, in post no. 1 on this thread yesterday, was the same one we saw about 1030hr heading north over Attlebridge, Norfolk, about 5 miles west of Norwich Airport. The noise from the engine and the loud shout from my better half in the garden got me out the front door in time to see it! Apparently it did a roll as it went by near us.
Nobody on this thread seems to have identified it yet. Was it the BBMF Spitfire PR XIX PM 631? (From the BBMF website pictures it seems to be PRU blue with Invasion stripes.) It did seem to be quite an early time of day for any displays by BBMF, and a long way east of any programmed events for that date. Maybe it was a practice for a flypast at Norwich Cathedral B of B service tomorrow morning Sunday 16 September.Andrew
I’ll have to keep a look out for that flypast this morning, only ever did that service once back in the mid 1980’s. It ended with a march past of the City Hall by personnel from Marham, Honnington, West Ranyham, Swanton Morley, Coltishall and Neatishead, plus a flypast by three Jags from Coltishall, Alas only personnel from Marham and Honnington tomorrow. The City Hall and Cathedral have had the RAF Ensign flying all week for the RAFA Wings Appeal, and a few of the Personnel from Neatishead were in the city assisting the Norwich Branch of RAFA in the collection, myself included. Had a good day myself in that I personally collected £350-400 (£315 in the first two tins I filled, don’t know how much in the third, but it was at least £35). Also ran into a guy that I was at West Raynham with, who I have not seen for 18 years.

Have had the pleasure of the BBMF’s Spitfire MK356 at Northolt the last couple of days. At 7ish tonight it took off, banked beautifully and headed of into the sunset. Perfect, a Spit flying out of a BoB base today.

On another note, Saw a Dakota overfly Norwich heading east this morning, It was too high and in the sun to make out any markings, does anybody know if anything is happening to mark what started 62 years ago on Sunday?
And 62 years ago, the 17th was a Sunday as well…..
Don’t know of anything specific this side of the channel, but there will be the usual stuff going on over in Holland.
I was hoping to go over again this year (not been since 1999) but work got in the way.

Its the Shoreham Airshow this weekend.
see their site at http://www.shorehamairshow.com
Still listing the Sea Hawk as an attendee, have they resolved the starter cartridge issue?
Might just go if the weathers ok.
While sitting here triping this a pair of Modern Typhoons whizzed passed in Shorehams direction, then a hunter following same route, then one Typhoon in opposite direction.

Yes, come on chaps, it’s Battle of Britain Day today!
Of Course it is 😀 , that’s why I’m currently bulling up my No 1s at the minute 😡 to spend a day in Norwich city center tomorrow with a Wings Appel Tin for the local RAFA Branch 🙂 . On another note, Saw a Dakota overfly Norwich heading east this morning, It was too high and in the sun to make out any markings, does anybody know if anything is happening to mark what started 62 years ago on Sunday?

I took a former Spitfire pilot to see the Battle of Britain memorial on the embankment yesterday. Although he part-sponsored it, his health had prevented him from seeing it before, and he was very moved (as we all are I am sure). It was also good to see the respect shown to him by passers-by, tourists and policemen alike; somewhat restores your faith in humanity. A memorable day, rounded off with lunch in the RAF Club and an opportunity to drink to his health.

Battle of Britain day flypast at *fill in the blank*…
Indeed, at 10.00am this morning I saw from the office window a Hurricane (looked to be LF363) heading at low level in a south-westerly direction overhead approx junction 17 of the M25…….. 😀

Not jealous. Whatsoever. Honest!!
Reminds of the day we were treated to flypasts by the Lufthansa Ju52 for three consecutive days – could see it flying from the office window, too! 😀

Battle of Britain day flypast at *fill in the blank*…
Yes, hubby was treated to it yesterday over his base.
It could have come a little further North so I could have seen it! 😮

Spitfires both Merlin and Griffon vareties sound amazing.
A couple of weeks ago I was stood ontop of the Midland Air Museums Sea Vixen with another forumite RobMac watching the Lanc along with two spits run in and break before landing at the airport. And yes the hairs on my neck were also standing on end.
Stunning looking aircarft from all angles with the addition of a fab soundtrack.
The Lanc wasnt bad either.
