In some countries aircraft have to be registered in the country they are owned. Like most airlines Alitialia and other Italian airlines lease a large amount of aircraft from the finance companies such as Debis. Debis is one of the bigger ones, and is based in Ireland as I think are one or two others, and as such all their aircraft operating in Italy have to retain the Irish registration.
Italy is one of the only European countries with a policy like this. In other countries domestic registrations are usually avoided for tax purposes as gb mentioned, but in Italy it is more administrative as opposed to financial.

A few Italian airlines keep their fleets or at leats parts of them on the Irish register, such as Meridiana, Alitalia, Air One, Blue Panorama for example. Other airlines have as well such as Transaero.
I know that the Irish government has found a loop hole in the way EU taxation is managed which is causing many global companies to open a small office in Eire purely for purchasing.
I guess it will be cheaer to buy your aircraft via Ireland but to avoiud the tax, keep them on the EI register.
On the other hand i may be talking b0**0cks.

Italy’s real reg starter is ‘I’ and not ‘EI’, why some of the AZ fleet for example has ‘EI’ I don’t know.
