Italy operation to bomb the USA during WW2

Folks,

I have a vague memory of reading about an Italian plan to somehow bomb the USA. I think it was through a secret airfield in South America or that a long range float plane would refuel somewhere in South America from a submarine. Does anyone have any information on such a plan?

IIRC, the Italian job was briefly detailed in a History Channel program about the German plans to attack America.

Flying boats refuelded by subs.
Recall in the 30s, the Iralians had some capable flying boats & the famous Balbo (sp?) flight.

Dear Member,

No it was Italian.

Can you please elaborate…….???

Besides the Japanese, the German’s also had a plan to bomb the US staging through some Latin American area.

I’ve heard of Japanese plans (balloons + Seiran & I-400) and German (Amerika Bomber) – but not of Italian plans….

I’d be interested to find out.

Could you perhaps be thinking of Japan? The Japanese definitely had a plan to bomb the locks of the Panamas Canal using special floatplanes launched from submarines but it never happened.

I once watched a documentary about how the Japanese bombed mainland USA by launching balloons with a bomb attached from Japan and letting them float all the way over the Pacific, accuracy was not very important obviously.
