RE: It’s the RAF over that Dam again!
Guys
This business with the non-display of swastikas is certainly nothing new.
I collected plastic aircraft kits during the 60’s and it was only towards the very end of this hobby, say by 1969, that swastikas were included in decal sets with the models. It always looked odd to have detailed 109’s, 190’s, 262’s etc, with full camo and no swastikas.
The story went that the kits were sold in countries where the swastika was still forbidden to be displayed, so the kits were marketed without them, regardless of where they were to be sold.
As for pulling down photos that might offend etc, more stupid bloody political correctness from the home of political correctness – the UK!
Regards

RE: It’s the RAF over that Dam again!
I agree with all the above comments too.
I had the girl from upstairs come and ask me for help with her school project. She is in primary school and is doing a project on ww2 and would I help her. I said yes and asked her what she wanted. The project was on air raid shelters and the war in general. After 10 mins or so and a few good hits on the old Goggle search engine, I had a few piccies of an Anderson shelter and cutaways etc etc. So that done she showed me what she had so far and this was a fewe pieces of paper and a few pictures one of A Halifax bomber being bombed up with the caption of “This is a German plane with bombs used to bomb Britain” Of course I corrected her and found out it was one off my site that a neighbour had printed off for her. I then got her a few pictures off the internet of Heinkel and Junkers just to give a German example. She told me that her teacher told them not top bring in anything in to school that had a German Swastika as they could be arrested as this wasnt allowed in Britain.
Now I dont know about anyone else but this is the first time I heared about this law in Britain. Certainly as far as I know there are a few countries in which the Swastika is not allowed but not Britain.
This was new to me as in primary school I had a book for my own project with a German dagger with Swastikas on it as well as an Iron Cross with Swastika and I was never told off. Or is it that today we are trying to be too PC these days.
Same as the very famous dog that nobody likes to mention today. But he had a name that was acceptable in that time. And for those who dont know his name and I suspect there will be very few, his name was Nigger. Dont you find it funny how black people go around adressing themselves like “Hey nigger hows it going” yet we all try to avoid the word. I suppose its just like being gay years ago it meant happy but now its all about being homosexual.
Anyway we are far too pc these day I really think we should call a Spade a Spade and a Club a Club.

Sorry for ranting a bit but everything these days is blown out of all proportion.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-09-02 AT 08:09Â PM (GMT)]I absolutely agree with the above – the British are so oversensitive when it comes to offending other people, but it’s not usually the workers, who instinctively know that the ‘other side’ would not be offended – rather it’s executive officers / civil servants who are more interested in protecting their careers than letting people enjoy themselves.
A great picture!

Hi Keith, you,re spot on when you say that our Allies are’nt as up tight as we are,I seem to remember being shown a memorial room at Oldenburg with many fantastic photos and memoriabilia from the war including …a Me 163- which they were incredibly proud of.

Hi David, Your right of course, this was not a commemorative flypast, just a good photo opportunity. However our German allies are not as sensitive as you might imagine. When we were setting up Cottesmore for the TTTE back in the late 70’s, we had a big painting of Winston in the Sgts’ Mess Bar. The Luftwaffe guys saw it and had no problems with it. However some of our highly paid decided it would be diplomatic to have it taken down. When the German boys came back and found it gone they thought we were bloody silly and being over sensitive! On my visits to Manching during the Tornado development programme on Tornado, I frequently dined in a room decorated with pictures of assorted Luftwaffe aces standing by their 109’s, 190’s etc. No offence was taken, and the Germans certainly never thought it would.

Another great picture Kieth! 🙂 Interesting to see the auxilary intake doors half way open.I’m guessing the cameraship was a tad on the slow side as she has some downward thrust on the go and a few notches of flap.
Was she part of some commemorative flypast or flying over the dam by chance?Am I right in thinking this is the Mohne Dam?
Thanks again for the pictures, keep em coming mate! 🙂
