IWM – Mossie simulator

I have heard talk of a mossie flight simulator in one of the IWM museums. Apparently it flies a raid in Europe during WWII.

Can anybody give more info such as which museum and what type of simulator, ie is it a ride in type or simply a visualisation on a screen?

Thanks in advance.

I’m informed that this won’t be making a return – the hardware has moved elsewhere and the installation was replaced at Lambeth by the 1940s House.

I remember riding on this simulator at IWM Lambeth in about 1995. For me, it was a great idea that didn’t quite work in the execution. The motion didn’t really add anything to the stunning footage – would have worked just as well in a non-motion theatre.

Thanks all. I look forward to hearing its current whereabouts and if it is in store whether it will re-emerge for public use.

I had a go too when I visited Lambeth in 1997 (or was it my 1993 visit?)

An excellent thing it was. Basically the very famous film of the Amiens raid. You just sit there and watch on the big srceen in front and the booth moves to give effect. I seem to recall the commentary stating the footage was taken from the C.O, Gp Capt Picard’s aircraft, but this has since perplexed me when I later read he was killed on the raid. Yet from memory the film covers the return to England too. Maybe I recall the commentary wrongly. Maybe it was one of the squadron CO’s

It’s a new one on me – it’s not stored at DX as far as I know. I’ll ask the London bods re its fate.

Hi Colin,

Yes, I remember when visiting the IWM at Lambeth in 1987 that that simulator was present and took a ride in it. It was absolutely fascinating and gave you the feeling you were actually on your way towards Amiens.

Mossie Simulator

Many years ago the IWM in Lambeth did indeed have a Mossie simulator. The film footage employed was the actual black and white footage shot from the nose of a Mosquito during the 1944 Amiens raid. However I have not seen this particular attraction on the last few occasions that I have visited the IWM. Does anyone know what happened to it?

I have not heard anything about this Tim, but if its going to happen at all, I would place my bets on AirSpace being the venue…maybe Jonathan has a better idea (are you out there Mr F? ;))

Sorry I can’t be of more help!
