J-6 in CAS role

I have read of the J-6 being used in the Indo-Pak war, Iran Iraq war and Ogden war as a CAS platform, but that seems very unlikely since the J-6 was a pure interceptor
it was armed with 2-3 cannons and 2 IR homing A2A missiles perfect for a low tech interceptor for third world countries
but in the A2G role it is woefully underequipped with only 2 hardpoints carrying a total of 1100 lb only ! why on earth even the most low tech airforces use it in the CAS role ?
or am I missing something ? did it have other hardpoints in the CAS role to carry other weapons ?
I have seen some PAF versions with small rocket pods inboard to the tanks on each wings , even with this plus lets say just 2 x 550lb bombs its still a poor platform
