I want to compare the J-7 family with the MiG-21MF/bis. In a non South Asia context that is…
I know this is probably very played out by now…
How do you guys think the performance on a J-7M stacks up with a MiG-21bis (non-UPG)? The J-7M has a lighter airframe and I have heard it turns horizontally better compared to the later MiG-21 models. In terms of weapons both planes can carry about the same types of WVR IR missiles such as the R-550 Mk.2, AIM-9, Python 3 and the MiG-21bis can also make use of the R-60 and some can use the R-73E.
Israel has provided M-2032 radars, Python 3, LITENING II and Griffin LGBs for both the J-7M (Burma) and MiG-21MF/bis (Romania, Cambodia), which plane do you guys think makes a better ground attacker? The J-7 has a slightly smaller payload then the later MiG-21s.
And finally which do you guys think has a better ground attack potential the J-7MG/PG/E/G or a MiG-21bis (non-UPG)? The J-7PG has been seen on display with a GBU-12 500lb laser guided bomb but with no LDP meaning that it would likely have to rely on a different type of plane such as a Mirage 5 to laze for it. As for which one is better for putting iron onto target that I think would have more to do with training I guess. But I would imagine the J-7PG would have better systems for bombing then the older MiG-21bis.
And as for air combat the J-7PG/E/G seems to have a better view out of the cockpit then the non upgraded MiG-21bis. If I am not mistaken the J-7PG/E/G should be a much better turner at all speeds while the MiG-21bis might climb better. Am I mistaken?
Of course the J-7s have one ball in their court for the most part, the younger airframes.
I guess I am just trying to figure out the pluses and minuses of the different airframes…
