Jacquard Spitfire

There’s a video posted on Facebook of this Spitfire having a rather heavy landing & bouncing onto its nose. Text is in French so unfortunately I can’t translate what they wrote about it.

Sorry I have to agree, as a LAE and display pilot of many years who has witnessed many prop strikes it shows poor airman ship to have not shut the engine down immediately ! One blade has already lost a considerable chunk Off of it and another larger bit could well have departed at any time, also it is standard and sensible procedure to prevent any further possible damage to the engine. Had something failed internally those pieces of metal are now running around the engine doing untold damage!!

Hi All,
So does this mean engine out and rebuild ?

Geoff.

Maybe not a rebuild but it could be, engine out for sure. Checks will be made on the crankshaft, pistons and bores to see what damage has been done.

Don’t think I’m an expert, I’m not. The last prop strike (and the only one was about 1980ish) A prop hit the ground and bits went all over. The pilot did the right thing and cut the engine, however the a/c still wanted to self destruct ASAP.

I have to agree with AA, to taxi with a damaged prop made me wince as well.

At the end of the day it was an accident, he shut have the engine off and forget about the other a/c.
It was also an emergency, the pilot should have cut the engine, just for a saftey reasons. That lad who picked up the tip didn’t have to go far to pick up the tip!

Never realised they where still needed for combat but if they are we need pilots like the following flying with a bit of bottle :highly_amused::highly_amused:

or these two

I’m sure its a given the engine will be thoroughly inspected, but given the wooden blades sheer off the way they do I would imagine the potential for engine damage is minimal with “that incident”. Certainly you wouldn’t want to go into combat with anything that fragile, or for that matter fly a public display.

As a pilot and a LAME with large piston engine experience (including V12’s), the video of the aircraft taxiing off made me wince. End of story!

I think it was more about clearing the runway asap. engine would have to be shock loaded anyway.

Has that ever happened to you?

No….?

So how can you comment on that. Could have sliced symmetrical lengths of blade off and been vibrating, yes, but….

He also might just have been in Shock and not thinking too straight. Considered that? No.

Armchairs are sooooo comfy these days, aren’t they?

Large amounts of power applied to taxi – would’ve been vibrating like a b@stard – not a nice thing to do to an engine after a propstrike…:(

The camera operator has no great future in that role.

Nasty event.

Moggy

You’re not wrong there, dreadful.
Surprised the pilot didn’t cut the engine ASAP after the lan…….er, arrival.
Watching another vid on the Spits first flight in 2010,I was interested to note that H and S hasn’t taken hold in France yet as they ran the engine up with the wheel chocks casually left on the wing to blow aimlessly away in the slipstream.

Thanks. So this is the one with the panther markings of No. 152 (Hyderabad) Squadron?

Correct, and formerly Thai Air Force after RAF service in FEAF.

Was this the ex-BBMF Mk XIX Spitfire with the contra-rotating props?

Nope, bought from Planes Of Fames Museum, Chino California, and the plane come from an Asian museum before.

That film is so poor quality they could sell the first bit to Discovery Channel to use in one of their many pointless UFO documentaries.
