James May Toy Story Sunday 23rd

Mr Soggy, Phil C et al

Just in case any gliding types are interested, there is a programme on Sunday night 9.30 BBC 2 in which James May (with help no doubt) builds a large model of a Slingsby Swallow & tries to fly it across the Channel.

Could be a laugh and you may possibly see a still of your ex Perranporth Swallow in flight.

cheers
Dave

Personally I loved it – a bit of genuine enthusiasm works wonders compared with “Strictly come prancing” etc etc etc etc etc ad infinitum.

Make the most of these ‘bloke’ programs chaps. Now that TV is run largely by the ladies, with their endless pre-occupation with ‘lifestyle’, ‘bloke’ programs will become rarer than pork in a halal butchers..

Thank goodness for Discovery, History Channel etc. Even with all of the repeats.

I think you could be right but I still don’t understand the implication….in fact he studied music at Lancaster University. Fast mod is one who reacts in seconds with the coloured pencil…

Yes, that’s my question – what’s OU?

What’s wrong with sexism? It was part of the observation.

Not another ‘blue pencil’ fiend !

What is a ‘fast moderator’ as opposed to a ‘slow’ one?

Charlie, sudden inspiration! OU = Open University. If it does mean that, what a strange label !

James is more OU than lifestyle. Lets not head off into the realms of sexism.

Charlie,

Maybe it’s my prejudiced slant. Read the credits at the end of ‘lifestyles’ and yes, worryingly, there are an awful lot of Danni’s and Jacqui’s and Fiona’s.

Even if your observation is correct that it is blokes compiling the ‘lifestyles’ it doesn’t alter my belief that there are many more lifestyle programs than ‘bloke’.

‘Lifestyle’ includes cooking, dining, fashion, body dysmorphia, tarting up homes or, anything else, hospital drama, costume drama and some 50/50 docudramas featuring passports, drug smuggling, immigration, police chases etc.,

‘Blokes’ ? Anything to do with WW2 or, previous wars.

Worryingly I think you’ll find a number of “lifestyle” programmes made by “blokes”!!

Even allowing for my vile prejudice, I make the present ratio about ten ‘lifestyles’ to one ‘bloke’.

Good for him – another very good programme. Did he enjoy the experience?

We have a special interest in the Meccano bridge episode.
My wife’s nephew was involved in building it, as an engineering student at
Liverpool Uni.

He is so enthusiastic and takes a special interest in what he does and did not destroy it, which I like.

Hear, hear! I cannot recall a programme I have not enjoyed, from the Airfix Spitfire through the Lego house to the longest model railway and Scalextric tracks in the world, and many others. All made with real enthusiasm, real interest and real technical development.

Edit: it occurs to me that James May totally embraces the Reithian commandments for the BBC – to educate, inform and entertain.

Thoroughly enjoyed the programme and as some have already pointed out – its TV and its entertainment.

I could sit for hours watching James May unlike the other two he associates with normally resides with. He is so enthusiastic and takes a special interest in what he does and did not destroy it, which I like.

A programme that tells a story of how a model glider flew 22 miles across the sea and an insight of how they achieved that feat, yet people pick holes in it :diablo:

Mixed thread but just to add another approval for the Neil Armstrong programme. Excellent and do look out for it on iPlayer anyone who missed it.

Fantastic viewing. Typical May chaos. Thought the GPS auto pilot was amazing. Well done BBC.

Only just seen this programme for the first time tonight, very good.
We had an odd notam at work one day advising about a helicopter dropping a large glider, it wasn’t until I saw it on TV tonight that I realised what it was about!

The Neil Armstrong programme mentioned by Bennyboy was absolutely superb, nice to see a programme cutting through all that b/s that yiu eusually see about the later part of his life.
What a guy.

Hangar was PPS at Booker and which wing do you mean

If you have a look on iplayer at 22.02 it is in the background, the one with the roundel.

There is a good Neil Armstrong documentary on BBC 2 at the moment.

It looks like the runway on Lundy is permanent:

Richard

It is, thats what they were aiming for:rolleyes:

Great prog, full of enthusiasm for aviation, model or otherwise. As has been said James is a great enthusiast and it shows. Hangar was PPS at Booker and which wing do you mean as there were several? Orange one on the wall was from a Stampe.
Much better than some of the C**P on telly 🙂
