Hi
I hope someone might be able to help with any information they may have come across on the following Americans who served/lived in the UK in wartime.
I am specifically after any information on visits to RAF Booker, Buckinghamshire by James Stewart, Clark Gable, Robert Montgomery and Theodore Roosevelt.
With both RAF Bomber Command and the USAAF also stationed at nearby High Wycombe and Daws Hill I suspect visits to the airfield were in connection with these.
Clark Gable also lived nearby the airfield in the village of Lane End. Any information however small regarding visits much appreciated.

for what its worth, i used to work at Crewe and one of my mates said that his mother worked on Crewe station during the war, and said she saw James Stewart on the station. Did,nt mention a date, so must have been on leave as in his book Jimmy Stewart-Bomber Pilot, it states he took his sq. to England 10/11/43 across the South Atlantic arriving at Tibenham 23/10/43.There is also a picture of him with Clark Gable but I think staged as JS flew B.24,s and CG to do with gunnery on B.17,s.

Well-known here in Worcester, an incident (possibly) involving Clarke Gable at Perdiswell in 1942:

Bit of trivia, both James Stewart and Walter Matthau were in the 453rd Bomb Group.

For James Stewart, for a place to start I’d recommend the book Jimmy Stewart, Bomber Pilot by Starr Smith, Zenith Press, 2005.
It has a lot of details of his various UK assignments: 445 BG (commander of the 703 BS); 453rd BG; HQ 2nd Combat Bomb Wing…

There is a recruitment film called Combat America presented by Clarke Gable based at Polebrook…some nice footage of the surrounding villages and airbase.
