Oh please….and we have Kangaroos and snakes in the main streets
Hey, it’s not an insult to you antipodeans Steve.
Oz is a long way to go for a fortnights break, and too much to see on a holiday, you need a 5 weeker.
Snakes, make good shoes.
Roos, rats with PR, and treated as such LoL.
Whenever they needed a close-up of Skippy switching a switch on the radio etc. the film crew would just pop out and 12-bore a roo, hack it’s arm off for the close up and then bin it. Mr Irwin wasn’t around in those days.

Flahdur is pleasantly warm in January. All the snowbirds from the colder US states fly down for some winter sun.

Scunthorpe sounds quite nice, and not too far.
Otherwise the Azores at any time of year and who cares how far when you only live twice?

Have you thought of Madeira?
I had thought of Maderia, not too far away either. If you have any recommendations for things to see/do, besides spotting at the airport, please can you PM me.:)
I’d suggest Madeira as well.
Depending on budget…parts of the States are nice in the winter too. Aside from the cliche Florida, think about Arizona or Hawaii.
Funnily enough I went to Hawaii in July this year, and as much as I would like to go back, it is far to soon to go back and I only have a week off so I don’t think it would be enough time and its not worth travelling all that way just for a week, but thanks for the suggestion.

South Africa it rocked my little world!

The Gambia – it’s nearer than S.Africa.
I’m sure the distance isn’t too much of an issue, not as if he’ll be cycling there is it! I’ve been to The Gambia myself, same time of year (Jan 2006) and I do have a trip report floating around the forum archives.
Can’t say I rated it much, lovely people, climate etc but there’s not an awful lot to do there and a week was more than enough for me! you could think about going to Asia maybe? South America? ie – Brazil :D.

I’d suggest Madeira as well. Very pretty with interesting history, and geography.
Went there in January on my honeymoon several yaers ago and it was nice.
A bit chilly and cloudy (at least that year) but far nicer than most places that time of year.
Also, it seemed to be somewhat the “off season” so crouds weren’t an issue.

In fact, just to be contary to the people who go towards the sun that time of year, I’ve been thinking about touring Yellowstone Park in the winter. Lots of snow, bison, elk, and it would be fun to see the hot springs/geysers.

Have you thought of Madeira? Myself and fellow forum members Adam Spalding and Tom Gautier went last December and it’s a wonderful place at this time of year. It isn’t roasting hot but it’s certainly far warmer than here, and it’s very relaxed and chilled out. Easyjet have some reasonable prices to get there from STN and hotels are easy to find for not too much money. It also has an awesome airport!
The three of us loved it so much we’re going back there two weeks today! 🙂
