There might be a problem translating english to french, but I sure dont have a problem tranlating french to english. Im currently trying to learn a certain kind of computer graphics for which there is almost no online help in english. A friend I have who is french who I know online suggested to me a french site which I translate in bablefish and have no problem reading. The sites down now, but you can see from the from this closed site message that its very readable:

Deuxième raison : j’ai du nouveau. Le problème a été partiellement réparé, j’attends de pouvoir réparer un autre bout du problème et là tout devrait être bon.

Avec un peu de chance (mais pour le moment on n’en a pas trop eu), le site pourra être réouvert samedi. Sinon lundi… Quoiqu’il en soit je vais vous tenir autant que possible au courant de ce qu’il se passe.

Un grand merci à Darkeden qui a bien aidé à faire avancer les choses, et encore toutes nos excuses pour ce problème qui est vraiment mal tombé (pile poil au moment où j’ai dû déménager).

Exactly. A good bit of the written language is super context sensitive. If you don’t know the context of the writting it can be difficult. But that only lasts for the first or second time that you read a certain topic. After you read for example: the sports page every day or something like that, you start to figure it out. I have never tried it but I would think it would take some pretty good software to make the leap on the context. Now stuff we deal with like tech specs of a jet, should be just fine.

Its a mix of their own meanings of the Chinese charachters and two other written sets: Hiragana and Katagana.

Japanese is a fun language though.

Personally, I find babelfish to be inadequate in translating Japanese as well as Korean languages. Since both languages have Altaic elements, it’s rather hard to re adjust the grammatical structure, especially since both languages have many words that sound the same but have different meanings depending on the context used.
