Japan's capability

Dear all,
Following some posts about if Japan would join in an Asian conflict i’ve just realised that I dont know much about Japan’s military capability. I know their predominantly armed with US equipment, especially aircraft and that they have the second largest economy in the world so they can easily afford state of the art equipment. Can some of you in the knowledge post back their military strengths (numbers of equipment etc). As a final question would they help NATO in a major world wide conflict.
