Jerry Yagens Aircraft – Flypast Mag an interesting point about swaps available

Hi Just reading the latest flypast about Jerry’s aircraft and there is a very interesting article in there about some static aircraft he has for Swapping. He doesn’t want to sell them – rather exchange or swap them. The aircraft mentioned here raise some interesting questions and answer some others.

To be specific the aircraft and my comments are as follows – i would appreciate the views of others here

1) Bell P39 Q – I wonder which one this is – Jerry has an airworthy rebuild on at Wangarratta in Australia – I wonder if they are also doing a static rebuild or if this is a stored ex PNG machine from the Talichet days from Tadji and is to be exchanged unrestored.

2) Bell P400 – Again I only have data on 3 of these and am unsure which one it is – two are reported as wrecks / derelict in PNG and one in the same state in the US

3)Douglas A 20 Havoc – I assume this is his US based project which he is now disposing of as Murray Griffiths at Wangarratta is building one of the Ex RAAF recoveries ?

4) Fairey Firefly Mk 1 – Obviously one of the several (2 or 4?) He aquired in Soputh Africa Ex Ethopia – Now in NZ ? ai Av Specs – Will it be refurbished before exchange?

5) NA F86 Sabre 2X Restored and 3X Unrestored – all at Av Specs in NZ?

6) Me 109 G – Mystery here although I have a theory – any ideas?

7) Polikarpov I-16 Rata – Which one ?

Again as I said this is quite a little repositeory and is a great initative by Jerry so I would love to tease out the details.

Over to you

Rlangham and David

There is another Boston / Havoc here in Aus – when Point cook did the one for their collection at Amberly another was done for PNG and is currently in storage at Amberly – this is Hell N Pelikan – and it is supposed to go back eventually when they get a display facility

The collection of parts with the Boston-Havoc preservation group were offered to the RAFM a number of years ago – they declined. I think the RAFM has enough on just trying to get some of their stored aircraft out on display.

Problem is, that as far as i know, there are only two complete Bostons/Havocs remaining, at the USAF museum and the RAAF museum, and i doubt they are likely to give up theirs. If i get in contact with the owner of the ‘Barwell Boston’ i’ll see if he would be willing to give his front fuselage to the RAFM – may not be a complete one but better than nothing

Well for my money the RAFM should be going hell for leather to secure an A-20/Havoc/Boston….on the basis that the Mitchell is in US markings i think some of the heavier mid war RAF medium bomber units are sorely underserved – i would hope that they may have something to trade….if memory serves several spits in store?

I think your right there TT, a Havoc/Boston in USAAF or RAF markings would be a welcome addition to the RAFM’s collection and one of their stored Spitfires would surely be well used in a swap.

Barwell is literally in my back garden (my street is on the border of two towns which have merged) so i’ll do some investigation and let you know, if it around here it’s within two miles of my house so shouldn’t take that long to find! Have an inkling as to where it is as well.

Edit – my dad says its on Hinckley road in Barwell, which is literally down the road from me! I’ll send him a letter or try and get his number, if possible arrange to see the boston and let you lot know

I’ve never seen it either Rob- nor even any pics – we did try and garner a look-see without success being relatively nearby etc…

Anyone have pix?

Near me in Barwell, land of chavs who smash up cars (including mine) theres a Boston front section, haven’t been able to contact the guy that owns it yet, think its the Boston association or something like that.

John,
This must be the static I-16 that was pictured on Jerry’s website back in 2002. It’s in Soviet white winter markings with #21 on the side. If I remember correctly, it said it was built new in Russia.

Very funny Yak 11 Here not her – I never said I could type – I have a secretary for that!!!

David
Yes a T1 would be nice and something different – At one time it was the early Mks that were rare now they seem more common

I have to say that I look forward to seeing one of the Firefly T.1 trainers back in the air.

Hi again David

Well the aircraft is up on the AvSpecs web site for sale and it would be easy enough for any of the NZ crew on here to check out so I guess I was asking what they knew as it is no big secret. I am sure someone from AvSpecs or one of the Daves etc will come up with an answer or even Jerry himself – I like these early Fireflies – I think the Chin Rad looks good on them – I know the Shearwater one will fly but I would love to see one sold and flown down her

Kindest regards

Setter – I think when you ask in reference to the Firefly ‘will it be refurbished before exchange’ somewhat takes it away from forum debate and more a question that Jerry alone can answer. By all means speculate at will!

David

And perhaps he will but in the absence of him and as it is public domain in Flypast it is quite acceptable to discuss it here and I am interested in what others think and how they can inform the debate. This is a Forum is it not .

Kindest regards
John

I should think these are questions that he is best qualified to answer.
