Jersey International Air Display 2006

A few from today’s display. Unfortunately the display line is set the best part of 500m from the crowd line, which makes photographing anything small reasonably difficult even with a 400mm bolted to the camera.

This year many of the helicopters had to pull out due to operational requirement, this included a Blackhawk, Merlin and Sea King. So the static display was relegated to one Lynx, which departed back to the airport in a cloud of dust this evening.

The Scandinavian Historic Flight opened the show. Their A26 looking particularly after a re-spray.

And no Jersey Airdisplay would be complete without the spirited display by the Dukes and their B25 complete with bombay advertising.

A few departure shots :-

Just pulled into the car-park, when Martin Willing in the T28 flew over in formation with the Gnat. I managed to fire off a couple of quick shots. Didn’t quite get it though.

The Huey left not long after on its track up north.

Next out were the BBMF, who hadn’t flown in the display the day before due to the cross winds.

Thanks for the comments

A few more from the display on Thursday. No apologies for the quality of some, still getting use to the lens.

As mentioned the AN2 Colt, put on a lovely sedate display, and ignored the display line all together.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c131/en830/Jersey%20Airshow%202006%20The%20Arrivals/Airshow%202006/IMG_0384fp.jpg

As promised a couple of the Huey going trough its paces. What it really needed as it appeared, low, from just behind Elizabeth Caste, was the Flight of the Valkaries and Robert Duval’s immortal line, “I Luv the smell of Napalm in the Morning”.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c131/en830/Jersey%20Airshow%202006%20The%20Arrivals/Airshow%202006/CRW_0229_fp.jpg

Belgian F16 was one of only two pieces of modern “heavy” metal on display.

The Harrier GR7 was the other:-
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c131/en830/Jersey%20Airshow%202006%20The%20Arrivals/Airshow%202006/IMG_0463fp.jpg

Going back in time to Sweden’s first Jet Fighter, a long distant and cropped shot of the SAAB J25Tunnan. I was hoping to catch a better shot at the airport later, however it either didn’t land in Jersey, or, I missed it’s departure altogether.

Shooting into the sun played havoc with the exposure, but did produce some “interesting” effects.
Long shot of B17G Pink Lady

Hello all,

Im just back from Jersey Air Show and want to say a big THANK YOU to all those out there offering their best wishes for our FIRST public event flying display …. we do ‘fast flypasts pulling up into wingovers’ type display on ‘Huey 509’! …. it was fun to fly and i hope you enjoyed it! We did!

We were a bit gentle with her but we did get those blades ‘slapping’ nicely… practice makes perfect so we will be doing more of it around the Blackpool area…just listen for the noise…

The other Helis pulled out because of operational requirements which meant in my day, time to deploy away to some hot spot in the world and prepare for some aggro!! …but im only guessing!

I can also announce that we now have the legendary Rob Tierney on our books as our 4th pilot qualified on G-UHIH…. take a look at www.huey.co.uk sometime …

enough from me for now ..

Fly Safe, Neil

Hi Neil

Thanks for coming down to our tiny rock. It was an enjoyable sight, and one I hope gets repeated again in the not too distant future.

I have some shots from the display and your departure this morning, which I will sort through and hopefully dig out some reasonable ones.

A few from today’s display. Unfortunately the display line is set the best part of 500m from the crowd line, which makes photographing anything small reasonably difficult even with a 400mm bolted to the camera.

Having seen Ian’s photos and comments I thought I would write a couple of lines to explain the display line at Jersey. Although I commentate a bit and am part of the team I am not speaking for them nor am I criticising Ian, especially after spending much of Sunday in the company of him and his wife, and having a lot of fun.

The display line at Jersey is determined by the geography of the bay. There is a need to maintain 230 metres at each end as they coincide with habitation. This has the unfortunate effect of making the centre of the line further away from the crowd due to the effect of the bay.

However, the 230 metre rule still applies so pilots are told at the brefing that they can bust the straight line as long as they don’t stray closer than 230 metres towards the crowd. The problem with this is that they would have to be turning, in order to keep withing the 230 at either end. This would mean bottom side passes which are not photogenic and pilots are not used to changing displays at the last minute, and should not do so unless 100% happy as that can add to stress levels and lead to mistakes.

Since most line up for fast passes and HAVE to be at 230 metres from crowd at either end it is inevitable they are far our but the organisers and Flying Control Committee are aware of this and are more flexible than may be found at other shows, the problem is that the very geography of the bay that makes it such a great place to see aeroplanes also means it is not the best for photography.

But, in fairness to everyone, most people were there to watch not take edge-to-edge photographs.

I may be biased but it is one of the best shows in the world. A little glitch with the photo opportunites is not a bad price to pay and you can get some good stuff at the airport.

Hope that explains,

Melvyn
