The Jet Age Museum has been awarded a grant of £9000 from the Gloucestershire Environmental Trust to build a Horsa cockpit. GAC founders, H H Martyn, built cockpit sections at their Sunningend Works, Cheltenham.

Yes, we’ve visited their project and they’ve been exceptionally generous with their plans and support.
That’s good to hear. I was worried you were going to have to raid box 473 and 474 at Middle Wallop 🙂
Would be nice to see it finished in the RAF Pattern 1 training scheme too as every museum I’ve sceen only shows the RAF Pattern 2 operational scheme. Would fit in nicely with their use at Brize Norton where a lot of the pilots from Stoke Orchard ended up going.

Presumably you are liaising with the Assault Glider Trust who have built at least two already. They must be the best source of advice and information for all things Horsa

RAF Stoke Orchard and No.3 Glider Training School is probably the one subject I can legitimately claim to be an expert in. 🙂 Even chose their crest as my avatar 🙂
I’ve spent 20+ years researching the unit, aircraft, movement, etc. and tracking down and interviewing pilots who passed through there. I always planned on writing a book but a lack of time and interest from potential publishers held me back.
But sure, any way I can help let me know. I’ve got shelves full of documentation and photographs and if I’m not in the pub when I’m back home you’ll find me in the bushes at Stoke Orchard cataloguing the remains.

Jed, Stoke Orchard is very much the inspiration for the project. A former GAC shadow factory as well as the home of No.3 GTS, as well as the significant contribution Gloucestershire’s other airfields made to glider assaults.
The Gloucestershire Environmental Trust company, which awarded the grant, is funded by Cory Environmental, who manage the tip at Stoke Orchard and pay the Landfill Tax.
PM when you’re back and I’ll tee up a visit and for you to meet the guys behind the project.

Awww heck.
Staverton used to be my home airfield when I lived in Cheltenham and I always wanted to get involved with the Jet Age museum as a volunteer but sadly moved abroad.
Oddly enough, I’ve just spent almost a year helping with a project researching certain aspects of the Horsa. My main area of expertise is the Hotspur but I’ve certainly got a lot of useful knowledge of the Horsa I’d be willing to lend if it’s of any help. I’ll be back in Cheltenham for a week in May and could pop by.
So are you planning on making a Mk.I or Mk.II?
