Jet Requirements

Can a jet engine run on Diesel or Stove oil? It does smell very similar when burnt but I am guessing the refining process to be different..?

Do vintage jets(cold war stuff) require the same as modern?

As long as that diesel fuel is clean and the weather is not freezing – Yes!

Yes that’s what I was thinking of. Is the AVPIN fuel the only way that they can start the EE Lightning?

British Canuck

What your are thinking about is AVPIN its the mono combustable fuel that the lightnings starting system uses and its getting very hard to get hold of. Most uk millitary jets use AVTUR fuel.

Does the EE Lighting have special fuel requirements. I keep hearing about a shortage of a fuel which pushes up costs for those running or taxying the Lightings?

Noooooooo not the F-111!!!! They found it difficult to keep their TF-30 turbofans running on regular jet fuel in the 70’s when they started flying them….! same engine in the F-14 A….. very tempremental…. the worlds first (and only?) afterburning turbofan.

Frogfoot however, could run on any old crap you could get your hands on and a mixture of different fuels…. tanks diesel….. parrafin….. normal car gasoline…… I think that this would only be done in a war situation however as it would neccesitiate a very sooner than usual engine change i’m sure!!!!! dunno how they did it though….. anyone know? or is this a question for AFM forum???

I seem to remember a rumor that the Su-25 Frogfoot was designed on just about any fuel.
