Just got back from Gatwick after my return flights today with jet2.com. They are a very good airline i think.

A quite reasonable start for today’s flight as I woke up at 6.15 to travel to the South terminal. Jet 2 desks were empty as we checked in and got given seats 22A/B, near the back. The terminal was fairly busy, but quieter than usual due to the end of the summer charters. EasyJet check-in was busy as always.
I don’t like South Terminal departures that much – too busy, but it does have a load of shops – more like a shopping mall than an airport. My favourite area is by the sports bar at the top of the lounge, where there is a big glass window where you can look out at the airfield. Great. Was using 26L so saw my plane, G-CELG “London” land 10 minutes late. Immediately as it landed, we were told to go to gate 01.
On Domestic flights now, they take a picture of you as you enter security and stick on your boarding pass a barcode, which is then scanned at the gate. Bit bizarre i though but a good system. Gate 01 was quite full when we got there and I was thinking yesterday that there would only be 20 or so PAX. But more and more kept coming and the gate was full by 0840 with about 85 people.
-LG stood at the stand in her beautiful livery as we boarded the rear steps to be greeted by 3 male cabin crew. I took my nice cream leather seats and relaxed looking at the movements on the runway, including a WORLD MD11 – don’t know what that was operating for. I like the way how on the plane they put stickers with all their destinations on the overhead storage bins, a different ‘destination’ for each bin.
Our captain introduced himself – Irish he sounded with a Norwegian F/O. He said we’d be going straight away and surely enough we pushed back and started engines before taxiing behind an AUrigny ATR72 to Guernsey. That went, then a BA737 then us. I love the sound of the 737 on take off and it was a very smooth one with only minor corrections for the wind.
After take off, we climbed to I’d say 16000ft after turning right, past the airport and towards London City. I got a brief picture of the Thames whilst the cloud was broken. The flight itself was very short and smooth and the crew did well to get to everyone who wanted a drink. Fairly reasonable prices if i remember rightly.
Then we started a descent down, in short but steep increments holding for a bit before positioning for 24R. I took some pictures – what of I don;t know, but someone might recognise one.!
Touchdown was smooth and we vacated quickly after heavy braking and exited by the Aviation Viewing Park, where I was to reside the rest of the day pretty much. Passed G-OOBD of First Choice having Engine Runs and the Fire Station (which I’d later see in action) and other aircraft like MON A300 and a few TCX.
We parked up at stand 01 bang on time and went through the T3 arrivals channel.
PART 2 (& pictures) SOON!!!!!!!!! 🙂

there are 3 or so ‘mounds’ like the one seen in the picture above. The other two are pretty much next to the building in the FCA 757 picture and they are much clearer. It seems that you’re much nearer when you look from the Viewing Park though

Nice report and pics. In the viewing park pic it looks like your quite far away from the viewing park.

actually i think the world MD11 was taking off empty but it was definately opearing into GAtwick that morning. I think it was operating a Thomas Cook service from Puerto Plata:
TCX065L 26/10/05 06:05 N801DE M11 POP 06:20 21M
This is it as it was parked on stand 21M. DOn’t have a clue where it went next though. At least that’s cleared up though 🙂

i have a feeling that that WOrld MD11 may have been opearting for Monarch as MON5578 which is usually operated by A300, but i didn’t see any A300s at LGW yesterday so that is possibility. Pictures in a minute

Great report tom, must do this sometime if Dad gets a break off work, any chance of them pics.
By: T5 - 27th October 2005 at 09:34
Great reports and glad you enjoyed your trip.
I also saw a World Airways MD-11 a few months ago at Heathrow. It was in Delta colours and, at the time, it was operating for BWIA.

After my day at the airport it was time to check in at the Jet2 checkin area, which was fairly bust as there were flights to Gatwick, Amsterdam, Murcia, Edinburgh and Alicante going within an hour of each other. We got allocated 23A/B, one row back from the earlier flight.
I hated Manchester’s terminals, especially T1 whose departure lounge was about the darkest and boring that i had seen. Poor selection of shops, lack of seating and very dark. Anyway, we didn’t need to wait that long as I saw my plane TF-ELA land from Gatwick, so I knew we wouldn’t be late as they have 55 minute turnarounds on the Gatwick route! (is this necessary?)
Gate 01 was the gate to be used and i didn;t like this as we had to sit down on one row of seats in the main corridor leading down to the other gates. I imagine at busier times this could be a nightmare. We seemed to spend a long time in there, enough time to see a WOW D8 arrive and depart again at gate 2.
Boarding was down a steep set of stairs to the apron and I walked again to the rear to be greeted by 3 female cabin crew this time in blistering heat – i’ve never been on such a warm plane! The cabin this time was nowhere near as good as on G-CELG, with horrid red-and-grey striped seats that were high up, so it was difficult to see out the windows. There was no advertising on the overhead bins like -LG, the only bit of Jet2 branding being the Magazine and a sticker on the meal tray advertising the ‘meal deal for £5’.
It was obvious that this plane was leased as everything about it didn;t feel right – safety cards with a different carrier’s logo and safety signs in Swedish/Finnish (i think) ahead of English.
We shut up all the doors at 5.55 as the crew introduced themselves to be a Dutch pilot and an english f/o. The push-back from stand 1 started bang on 1800 and engines were started during the latter part of this, as the cabin staff did the emergency briefing. The sky was dark now and i could see a couple of planes on approach. One landed before we could cross 24R whilst we sped accross to 24L before the other arrived.
Very speedy taxi out as the cabin lights were switched off ,and did a rolling take-off from 24L which was obviously difficult due to the gusty southerly crosswinds before we rotated and climbed up to a similar altitude to the outbound flight. The inflight service was good again although not many people bought stuff. We didn;t have any info. on our route but i presumed it was down towards birmingham and then over london.
ABout 1830 we started a slow descent into obviously busy London airspace as we descended steeply, then less so steeply before turning a few times. The sunset gave a clue as to which way we would land – towards the west on 26L. We popped out of the clouds at about 1000ft and the pilot did a smooth landing on the runway and exited quick for a Monarch to land. We taxied back to the Pier 1 parking at Gate 3 this time, next to a FlyVe BAe146 at gate 1 and another BAe146 at gate 7. An easyJet was getting ready for push back from gate 9 and the Aurigny ATR72 had just pushed back from gate 5.
The 100 or so passengers all disembarked using the airbridge and then we queued for a while whilst security checks which involved taking pictures of you were done. At Gatwick, when using Pier 1 gates, departing and arriving passengers must use the same walkway so they take a picture of you so that you can be tracked until you quit the area – make sure you don’t hitch a ride on another plane.
All in all, Jet2 are very efficient airline with good service and obviously healthy loads on the route. I’d find it hard to believe that they would drop the route, as some people have suggested of late.
Marks:
Punctuality – 10/10
Service – 9/10
Comfort – 7/10
Overall – Excellent airline

[QUOTE=tomfellows] I find the 737 to be good aircraft. Never had problem with it and it must be successful in order for so many airlines to use it. QUOTE]
It is successful. In fact there are more 737’s on the planet than any other type of airliner! I’ve done quite a few flights on different variants of the 737 with various airlines and always liked them. Then again, it’s a plane. Of course I like it 😀

interesting to see you got TF-ELA on the inbound!
I’ll speak more about it when i have more time – but i didn’t think that it was very good at all – horrible red and grey cotton stripy seats and not even in the proper nice livery. I knew it was going to be -ELA as this always operates the 2 MAN-LGW services in the afternoon and I had a feeling it wouldn’t be as nice as it is leased.
At least it was nice and warm on it! The cabin thermometer as i got off said it was 24C!
By: tomfellows - 26th October 2005 at 22:18
well, I’ve been on 6 733s this year so i should know!!! To be honest, they are perfectly good planes – very safe etc,, They make nice noise on take off and when they start to taxi. The early 737-300s have a funny thing on the end of the wing, and when you fly at night it lights up and today it illuminated the cabin as all the cabin lights were turned off. I try and sit near the back if i can – i think you get to see more and hear more from there (don’t ask why! – it’s probably just me that notices that)
I find the 737 to be good aircraft. Never had problem with it and it must be successful in order for so many airlines to use it.
That World airlines was definately an MD11 as i remember seeing the wing-tips on it. It had a predominately black livery.

Excellent report mate, interesting to see you got TF-ELA on the inbound! Ive flown on G-CELS x2, CELU,CELV and CELX and found all flights to be excellent.
Irfan – 737s are just pretty average to be honest, just like any other plane!
By: LFC24 - 26th October 2005 at 22:08
Nice report, mate. 🙂
What’s the B733 like? I’ll be travelling on my first 737 next year on a trip from college.
That World MD11… could it possibly have been this DC10?
