Jet2 suspends Red Sea flights from March
Feb 07, 2011 18:35

Jet2 has suspended all flights and holidays to Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada from March 1.

The airline is offering clients with bookings after that date a full refund and a 5% discount on a booking to another destination, or £125 off a booking with sister operator Jet2Holidays.

A statement said: “Due to the ongoing state of civil and political unrest in Egypt, Jet2.com and Jet2holidays have suspended flight services and holidays to Sharm el Sheikh and Hurghada from 1 March 2011.

“Whilst the Red Sea resorts are not currently affected, the safety and comfort of our customers is our number one priority, and as such we do not want them to face the stressful uncertainty of whether their holiday will go ahead as planned.”

The statement continued: “Jet2.com and Jet2holidays are contacting all affected passengers booked to travel to Egypt. Customers will automatically receive a full refund for the cost of their flights or holiday, plus a discount off a new booking.

“Jet2.com and Jet2holidays will replace the suspended Egypt programme with additional flights and holidays to Spain and Portugal, adding 70,000 seats across a number of its bases.”

Jet2 will continue to operate its current programme to the Red Sea resorts unless government advice changes. Current Foreign Office advice against all but essential travel to cities including Cairo and Luxor does not cover the Red Sea.

Surely the additional Spain and Portugal flights will bring more revenue in due to the forum around time and the amount of money Jet2 are able to charge to these places compared to Egypt??

I bet that Jet2.com are kicking themselves now that President Mubarak has stepped down, because a large amount of the violence and tension in Egypt will no doubt disappear, and things will slowly begin to return to some sort of normality now that the military is in control.

Seeing as they have already announced that they have suspended their Egypt programme from March 1st, will Jet2.com now look to re-instate it or not, as I suspect that it may well annoy all those customers who had previously booked to go to Egypt and have been told that they are not able to go, and then perhaps be told that they might well be able to go…?

Egypt will soon recover if tour operators offer low cost holidays.

what’s to say LS haven’t moved all of their booked pax on to MT or ZB, or another carrier who will still be flying?

That’s not what the press release says they’re doing… And in any case, I’m not alone in my thinking – take a look at one of the other popular forums for pilots and you’ll see others have the same view of JetPoo’s actions too.

That’s a bit harsh Andy, especially as none of us really know what facts on this one. what’s to say LS haven’t moved all of their booked pax on to MT or ZB, or another carrier who will still be flying?

Yeah, yeah, yeah… IMHO, they’re not concerned about their passengers – they’re concerned about their revenue and load factors this Summer. The trouble in Egypt doesn’t suddenly start on March 1st, it’s already starterd in some areas. So why are they not suspending all Egypt flights from now on? If they were really concerned about their passengers, surely they’d stop flying to Egypt right now, whilst the trouble is still ongoing. Oh I know, most of the flights going now are fairly full because they were booked before the troubles started, and they don’t want to lose that revenue.

What they really mean is “Since holiday travellers are too stupid to realise that the places we fly to in Egypt are OK, and even though we only fly to places that don’t have any problems, our advance bookings for Egypt have dropped through the floor since the troubles started in Cairo. So, in order for us to avoid making a thundering great loss on our Egypt operations this summer, we’re going to let down all those poor folks who’ve already booked to go to Egypt and we’re going to try to take money off of them to go elsewhere instead.”

Very poor show by JetPooh IMHO, but typical of the low-cost sector that they don’t have the courage of their convictions and operate the flights they’ve offered when there’s no “customer safety” related reason why they shouldn’t.

A wise move if you ask me, good to see that they are putting “customers” first, although I do feel sorry for those people whose flights/holidays that this suspension will no doubt affect.
