Hi,
I’d like to discuss an older weapon: I guess everybody has seen pictures of Mirages armed with combined fuel tanks/rocket pods, the JL-100. A fuel tank with rockets in its nose section.
Mirages could also carry bombs attached to fuel tanks (4 250kg I believe), I forgot the designation of that one (I’ll look it up tonight).
That was a good way to achieve bigger weapon loads for aircraft like the Mirage III which only had 5 hardpoints. Nowadays you don’t see those types of weapons anymore. I guess they offer too much drag (on a similar note, nowadays you also see less bombs carried on MERs, they offer too much drag too). It’s not a good picture but I think you can see the bombs (in blue) attached to the fuel tanks:

Any other reason why we don’t see such combined fuel tanks/weapons anymore??? Were they ever successfully used in conflicts?? Any other comments??
Does anybody have any interesting pictures of Mirages armed with these weapons?
Best regards,
Ference.
P.S. you can read more about the Mirage III and these weapons in this month’s Air International.
