Hi all,
Having a bit of a moan here as I’m fuming.
I thought I’d pop down to the RVP tonight to get a photo the Airblue A319. I drove the 10 miles from home and arrived at the AVP at just before 20:25. A lot of cars were leaving and the bollards were blocking the car park entrance.
I parked my car to the side and kindly asked if I could pop in and get a quick picture of the Airblue as it was due in any minute. I received a terse “no you can’t it’s shut”. I was prepared to pay to just take the one shot but no way was I getting in. I asked why and he just kept repeating “IT’S CLOSED”. Ok I see the rules are last vehicles in 30 mins before close (closes at 8.30pm) – I wasn’t sure, I thought it was dusk but there you go. I told the guy I spend over £200 a year in this park and he couldn’t let me walk across to get a shot – and it was technically still open ! ANyway as I drove off in disgust the Airblue landed. Well that must have made the bloke’s day.
I know rules are rules but surely he could have let me walk across for 2 mins to take a quick shot and then leave. 20 miles round trip wasted journey 🙁
He even threatened to ban me from the AVP ! What for ? For being disappointed and frustrated because he wouldn’t let me in ?
What a total jobsworth.:(

Thanks for clarifying this.

The first post says it all “Last vehicles 30 minutes before closure” (closes at 8.30pm.)
If this is the rule for which he is paid to uphold then the employee is in the right and correctly doing his Job. End of story.

Or “pay a quid” outside of business hours to use the spotting facilities to ones heart-content, It meens “mr gate man can get home” and the person wantng to see other aircraft can but without the normal In-hours facilities.
How many would pay a quid to do this?

Sounds like a case of “six of one and half-a-dozen of the other” ie 1 bloke keen to get his photo + 1 bloke keen to get home to his family + 1 hot day = Boom! Put it down to experience,

For all any of us knows, he might get chancers asking the same thing every night and he’s fed up with it. All I’m saying is it sometimes worth seeing it from the other side.

The UK seems to of lost any customer service skills …… Just pop to the average high street and in a lot of shops you feel like you are getting in the way not keeping them in a job!
The guy had the full right to say No but sometimes it’s the way it’s said that gets your back up.
Being an ex stacked in the RAF as well I’ve said it lots of times 😀

Yes, the bloke had a right to say no.
But did he really need to?
Come on, it’s a minor thing but what happened to civility..doing something nice for someone?
When I was in the forces, I always tried to accomodtae photographers and spotters. Yes, it was a bit of extra work, but people went home happy (I hope).
I fear too many people when given power just love to use it
(I’m going to say “No” because I can and they gave me this neat vest and whistle).
Come on people, be nice.
We’ll all be dead for a long time, so try to make someone happy today.

I didn’t say it was the end of the world did I ?
The park was still open and the plane was due in any minute. It was a two minute job to get a snap. Get off your soap box.
I’m sure garyrussell has never moaned about anything in life as there are people far worse off.
I certainly would never complain publically about something so trivial.
Seems though opinions not agreeing to you are unwelcome.
Life too short mate…just get on with it

ive been on the other side of the fence when in the RAF. even though im an aviation nut myself but not a collector of numbers etc.
there are certain times when no means “no” and the spotters were liable to get arrested or picked up and removed. at times during airshows etc some spotters seem to get into a number collecting frenzy and started stepping around barriers or even pushing them out of the way to get into restricted areas. you would have to bellow in no uncertain terms to get them back into the real world.. some on the other hand were polite enough to ask if i could take a photo of something they could not quite see or give them the number and i would be all to happy to help
certain shows, events and areas are restricted from an insurance point of veiw also. they cannot risk you being the other side of that barrier whilst they are around after closing hours. if you were to sneak in later then thats your own look out.

To be honest, you asked and he had the option to say yes or no
He chose no, so you can’t be annoyed because he didn’t pick the option you wanted
It could well be the case that this sort of thing constantly happens when he’s trying to shut up and being delayed all the time but folks trying to get in for that one last pic
I know this happens with shops, when my wife worked at a supermarket she was often late because they stopped entry ten mins before closing but some insisted on coming in right up until closing holding everyone up.
I really wish that this sort of thing was all I had to worry about in life
You arrived late , was disappointed and missed taking a pic of a jet.
Disappointing, yes, but not the end of the world surely.
Always worth remebering that when you ask, the answer could be no…you just have to accept that.
Don’t get me wrong, on the face of it it does seem unreasoinable giivin the simple fact of the immediate situation, but viewed in the greater context it will mlook very different.

I’m not sure I see the problem here. You turn up after the park is closed to entry and expect to be let in? The bloke might need to get off , catch the last bus or whatever. Soemtimes it is worth trying to see things from the other side……
Thats very true Arthur, but it sounds like the guy Culpano dealt lacked some basic manners.

As far as moaning at the RVP is concerned, these are the best spotting facilities in the UK. Nowhere else has such spotter-friendly facilities and we should be grateful they exist at all.

They are getting such a bad name….since they started blatantly ripping spotters off with the pricing i have refused to darken its doors again…i have had run ins with these muppets in the past also….as i drive a large van, one time..after about 100 visits this idiot decided my van (which i always parked at the furthest back parking row near the trident) was a “viewing obstruction for others” and wanted me to park where the coaches go and pay the coach tariff! He got to experience a tirade of Glaswegian disgust :diablo: to be fair his mate who appeared during rant told him i was fine to use car park… Go elsewhere, the AVP seems to be Anti-spotter more and more only interested in the family visitors.
By: OLD LHR SPOTTER - 23rd May 2012 at 01:20
Shame they could’nt have had an option where you could park elswere but get In on foot by paying by one of those self paying machines at a gate say £1 but with no facilities open just the ability to view and take pics……
By: MANAIRPORTMAD - 23rd May 2012 at 00:42
Sorry you had that experience, me and Rob try to find other places to watch the planes (of course sometimes the RVP is the only option).

Should have taken a photo of him, just to see what he would have said. 🙂
