Hi guys.
I have just been watching John Nichol flies as if you didnt guess by the title of the thread. I never really rated the program before although I like John Nichol in some of the other things he has done. But tonight was different for tonight he was flying in South Africa at Thunder City. And his stead of choice, well who could mistake it, it was the EE Lightning.
I might just be watching more of John Nichol flies from now on.
I think my favourite quote from the program was when a former Lightning pilot said what his pilot on a flight had said to him. Must have been while on instruction.
His pilot turned round and said to him. “Now my young boy you will know why we put wings on this plane, its to keep the nav lights apart”
I think he was trying to say with the vertical performance so good it was like a blooody rocket more than anything else.
Just brilliant.

Your remark about vertical performance is spot on, having been there, I can vouch for that. Not sure of actual figures but initial rate of climb at sea level was in the region of 60000ft/min. The other figure talked about was brakes off to 35000ft in 2.5 – 3mins or something equally mind blowing.

Discovery Wings, I think (I have Telewest, but the package including DW is too expensive imv – in order to get just that one channel I have to buy a package including all the dross under the sun).

Would this be on the TV?
In anticipation.

Loved the program.
I liked the bit where Dave Stock was giving himm the seat drill
DS ” lets try pulling the handle to see how hard you have to pull on it to get it to move”
JN “I’ve done it! I wont have to use this, I really wont have to use this”
He had a grin like a Cheshire cat when he climbed out. Lucky bugger. He has earned it though.
Now if I can only persuade Mrs Fence that Cape Town is a good Holiday destination.

He’s certainly come a long way and done well since Saddam’s boys beat the s**t out of him.

Merlin,
Just had some email correspondence from John Nichol today as it happens – I’m helping him out with a chapter in his new book on US and RAF bomber crew in 1944/45. During my recent correspondence with John “our” time has been “rudely interupted” by his sojourns to South Africa, the US and Russia for the program you mention. I seem to recall he has also been having some fun with the Super Hornet, Mig 29, B-29 and C-130 – he particulalry recalls his time in the Mig 29 with some glee! And he gets paid to do this job – lucky so and so!!!
If this program is not sufficient an excuse to convince the missus to get digital TV then I doubt I’ll ever get it!
Regards
Skipper
