Johnnie Johnson & Aldof Galland 1991

Found these photo’s that I took at an aviation aces seminar in Charlotte, North Carolina hosted by Virginia Bader, who is related to famed Douglas Bader. RAF ace Johnnie Johnson & Luftwaffe ace Aldof Galland were the main speakers, signing prints and books. Had a wonderful talk with Johnnie Johnson and what a fine man with a wonderful sense of humor & quick whit. It was easy to see why he was one the top fighter pilots of World War II. I am sure many of you had the honor and pleasure of meeting Johnson at events in the Uk over the years since the end of the war. Galland related his story about his request to Goering for a couple of Spitfire Squardon’s during the Battle of Britain, a very historic talk ! Seeing these two men side by side and knowing what history they have taken part in was a unique experience!

Mark:

Yes, guess both these men lived each day and each minute in WWII like it was their last day on earth. Mutal respect is what I did witness on that day during their time together. Its sometime hard to believe that Germany and our two nations fought two massive global wars in the last century. Now are joined by many common virtues and economic reasons. Here in South Carolina where I live in the USA , there are now many German firms doing business and of course we have a huge BMW plant here that makes the X5 and the new Z4 Roadster. 60 plus years ago BMW was making parts for the Luftwaffe ! Much better relations in this century !

Checking out that Spitfire !!!!

Two of the finest fighter pilots of all time sitting side by side, Galland was a pleasure to speak with as well and the talk they gave on the Battle of Britain was outstanding and took plenty of time for question and answers by the audience. I sat beside a pretty good pilot in his own right, P-47 56th FG Ace Bob Johnson. Galland & Johnson really put on a show with great give and take between the two aces. Now these shows are very rare indeed ! Galland spent alot of time checking out that Spitfire Print !!!!
