Hello!
One question concerning the F-35 currently under development and early flight testing. I just checked some basic parameters like wing loading, fuel fraction, TWR (static) and empty weight. I was actually quite surprised to find it more akin to a bomber than a fighter. Still does it have the designation “F” and will be backbone of Navy air defence. Can somebody tell me what exactly the mission requirements have been for the JSF?
I used the stated may thrust of 191kN for the current engine, which is likely to increase over time. Empty weights I used are:
F-35A: 13170kg, Fuel 8380kg
F-35B: 14588kg, Fuel 6350kg,
F-35C: 14478kg, Fuel 9110kg,
A and B 42,7 m² Wing Area
62,06 m² Wing Area
Preliminary figures, but from experience we can say that current empty weight is the best you can get. The trend is always upwards. Especially the Navy version looks like the return of the Tomcat (heavy & underpowered). :diablo:
I am not doubting the unlimited wisdom of USAF & USN procurement and mission requirements, I am happy that these parties have agreed to one (at least in some respects) similar aircraft. McNamara will be content to see this happen in his late 80ies. I just would like to know what they intent to get out the JSF. Surely not a nimble and inexpensive fighter.
