I came across this quote from this web site http://www.forvalor.com/a6.htm .
While here, in April 1944, he led the joint British-US raid, Operation COCKPIT, attacking Sambang, northwest of Sumatra in the Dutch East Indies. This mission unloaded 30 tons of bombs on Japanese installations, destroying two Japanese merchant vessels, two destroyers, one escort vessel, 24 Japanese bombers on the ground, a large refueling station, a power station, barracks and dockyard.
Does anyone have any further info on either Operation Cockpit or Operation Transom. I’ve so far been able to find nothing further on them. These joint strikes possibly involved USN & RNFAA Corsairs which I thought painted an interesting picture. Any further info would be great. 🙂

Hmmm…not a whole lot here, Rob….checking pg. 69 of ‘Corsair aces of WWII’ by Mark Styling, all I could find said that the British were at that time blooding their Corsairs attacking the Tirpitz, but later they did hit Sabang on 25 July (no name to this operation that I see)…however apparently they acted in concert with the Saratoga’s air wing, but they ALL took a back seat to the battleship’s guns of the US Navy when they sent in 3 battleships, 7 cruisers, and 2 destroyers to bombard targets at Sabang….don’t know what planes were used but could imagine Corsairs and Hellcats from both countries alongside Seafires, Fireflies and TBM’s….over to you.
