Ju 88 crash at Withybrook on 16.09.1940

16.09.40 1KG54 Junkers Ju 88A-1 Wnr.7087 Hptm. Henke

Hi Guys,

I am currently in contact with the nephew of Willi Henke, the ill-fated pilot of the Ju 88 that crashed at Withybrook. We are hoping that some of our great forum members may have more localized information regarding the crash.

My contact has sent me a scan of his uncle, this will be added to our website in due course. At this time I am slowly constructing the page. So far I have the A.I.(k) Report No.555/1940 plus a scan of a newspaper cutting showing some minor wreckage in the field. If anyone has anything further we would really like to hear from you.

Regards,

Melvin

Hi cabbage & Beaufighter VI,

Thanks for taking the time to help, yes info from Blitz 2, not sure which wartime newspaper run the story? The info from Beaufighter is very interesting, maybe I need to check Balloon Command files? Are they held at the NA?

Thanks again guys!

Melvin

Hit balloon cable site 4, 916 Squadron, wrecked, bombs exploded. 2 killed, 2 POW. Also a statement that bombs were jettisoned over Coventry.

Hi Melvin,
There is a brief mention of this in the book “The Blitz, Then and Now” volume 2. Do you have the details as mentioned in said book?

Regards, Cabbage
