Ju88 Crash Info, Driffield Raid

I’m looking for any info on the Ju88 that crashed at Friasthorpe East Yorks after the raid on RAF Driffield 1940, This is not the aircraft that crashed at Barmston, they are two seperate crashes I believe. I have Broken Eagles book and I now believe the picuture that is in the book of the so called Fraisthorpe crash aircraft is not correct and this is more the Barmston aircraft.
I have done a field walk over the Fraisthrope crash site and it appears the aircraft went in very heavy and was not just a belly landing, more info to follow.

Many thanks…….

I suspect this must be the same aircraft noted elsewhere as near Hunmanby?

Of the crew, Uffz Arnulf Neumeyer is still missing and officially unaccounted for.

Yep just making sure its same aircraft, cheers, that helps alot, more or less what we were thinking with the explosion on impact, scattered its self over a wide area.

The one I had originally though of was the incident on 15 August 1940 (also a Ju 88) shot down near Bridlington Road Reservoir, Scarborough. However, the report details (above) are correct for the Fraisthorpe incident.

Andy, you may have been thinking of the Ju 88 near a small reservoir at Woore south of Nantwich, Cheshire. Shot down by ack-ack.

Here is the RAF Air Intelligence “G” (AIg) report:

15 August 1940, Fraisthorpe, near Bridlington.

Junkers 88 (built at Dessau)

No markings found

Engines Jumo 211

Aircraft completely exploded over wide area, due to fighter action.

3 x m/g found

Few remnants of magazines

Traces of horizontal bomb racks. One UXB almost buried. Possibly 100kg? (RE’s to demolish) Also 2 x incendiaries.

Presumably four crew from miscelaneous human remains found.

No armour plating found.

Any bullet strikes not ascertainable.

Fuel tanks destroyed.

No instruments or bombsight found.

No fuselage emblems found.

Reduced to produce.

This is a straight transcript from the intelligence officer’s original notebook. Hope it helps?

I think I have the original notes on this (and other?) Ju 88 crashes from RAF Intelligence Officer, Fg/Off StJohn Peskett. From memory was this (or another?) at or near a reservoir?

I will find the notes, scan, and post in due course….

Have you tried contacting Bill Norman via his web page? I have always found him reliable and helpful. Anyone can make mistakes I suppose.
