The Jubilee flypast over Windsor was very good, even though there were no Tornado’s, but the Golden Jubilee flypast was so much better. The C17, the new aircraft for Transport Command. Then,
VC10, Nimrod, Canberra’s, Harriers and Jaguar’s.
It was only 10 years ago, but how things have changed.

…but these days we neither need, or can afford, the size of RAF of the past.
One could make the case that based on the lack of post 1945 combat operations, the UK didn’t need a large RAF back then. 🙂

The Jubilee flypast over Windsor was very good, even though there were no Tornado’s.
The Tornado’s were in formation with the VC 10, admittedly only 2 of them.
I enjoyed both the Windsor and Buckingham Palace flypasts even if they weren’t as large as in other years. The Windsor one had 85 aircraft and 2 very unique formations and certainly very memorable.
As in all things in life there is always a feeling that the “old days” were the best, but these days we neither need, or can afford, the size of RAF of the past.
As for which aircraft, I imagine that in the past people moaned there were too many Lightnings and not enough Spifires. Then too many Tornados and not enough Phantoms, etc etc.
I wonder what we will see for the 100th anniversary of the RAF?
