Dear all, I am an apprentice at Rolls Royce, Derby and we are currently looking at the work required to restore the prop assembly from a Jumo 211, currently sat in the corner of the workshop. Have any forum members had any experience with this particular engine in regards to restoration? One concern of our instructor is tooling, does this still exist? We will also require a prop stub, as one of these is missing, where could a suitable replacement or substitute be obtained?
We are looking forward to making a start on this project as and when we can, its certainly different from our usual work.
Any help would be most appreciated,
Best wishes,
Dean

Thanks for the help folks, I will keep you updated on the project as things happen. Apparently the rest of the engine is with the Heritage Trust.

Interesting as Rolls Royce did the first overhaul of the 605 in a well known 109 in the late 80s and they made all the tools for it!

Jumo tooling
A set of metric spanners should take care of most of it.

You might find help from here: http://www.motobende.de (If they are still in operation–since they have not updated in a while)
German aero engines are their speciality and perhaps they would lend assistance. (And they have performed a full restoration on a Jumo 211 in the past.)

No doubt the tooling could be made, but it has taken some persuasion, and will probably take more, to get this far, it is very much a matter of doing the project in our own time, something which a majority of apprentices will be / are unwilling to do- you should see the rush for the door at the end of the day. As an aviation ‘buff’ i’m trying to make it a personal mission to get this project at least started, and hopefully learn a few skills along the way. The main goal is as little expenditure as possible, i’m just going through the motions, trying to get the project started by giving our instructor as much help as possible.
As for the rest of the engine, it is not in our workshop, but may be with the Heritage Trust, we have been tasked with the prop alone. It is an interesting contrast to have part of a Jumo 211 next to a Trent 900. How technology changes.
Best wishes,

Couldn’t you make any tooling required?
It is just a suggestion, as I’m sure Rolls-Royce Derby would have all the equipment and skills necessary. The Jumo211 isn’t used in any flying aircraft and I’m not sure if there are any ground-running even (well not yet MerlinPete ;)) so finding original tools may be difficult…
…on the other hand if you were to produce a set you may be doing the preservation world a great favour.
By the way is there a Jumo211 in the corner…..or just the propeller-hub?
