RE: Junkers JU 88

Hi Jase, Would I be right in assuming that you are the JASE that worked for me on VASS at Laarbruch? If so, nice to hear from you. Where are you now? No it was’nt a wind up. The real aerials were removed and disappeared many moons ago. So we had to improvise. The main sections were indeed manufactured from broom handles and the other bits from welding rod. We made them as accurate as possible, but they are replica’s.

Hi Keith,
Nice coincidence. I’ve Just had a look at the site, it looks very good. I’ve added it to the old favorites list.

Hi Nephews I’ve been away a while. Yes it was me that restored it. You can see my piccies of the aircraft after restoration if you go to the East Fortune website at WWW.NMS.AC.UK/flight. Hope you like them!

RE: Junkers JU 88

Hi Merlin,
I’m glad I raised the question. It’s interesting to get an answer, like yours. As I said before I only came across the JU 88 reg. & the link with Hendon, by chance. There also several other enemy aircraft listed but usually very little info on them & what became of them.

Cheers,
Neilly

RE: Junkers JU 88

Hi Moggy and Neilly

Moggy you were close but let me tell you the answers first

What squadron captured it? 165 (Ceylon) squadron

how many aircraft were sent to intercept? This is a bit tricky as my records tell me 2 Spitfire VB’s flown by Flt Lt Arthur Ford Roscoe in BM515 and Sgt B R S Scamen in AB921.

what happend to it before landing? It was fired upon and damaged by AA guns at the airfield despite being escorted by Spits.

what aircraft intercepted it? Spit VB’s as shown above.

After being designated PJ876 why was it grounded? It was grounded in July 1943 after the Cylinder head blowing. but returned to flying condition in September.

and finally who on this forum knows more than most about this aircraft? Keith McKenzie knows most about this aircraft and was my source of knowledge.

The last question is not me trying to be smug it is a real question as someone that uses this forum has worked on this aircraft at some point and to ask another question Where did they work on it?

He worked on it at St Athans where he took part in it restoration. So the credit for its present condition should in part go to Keith and his team.

I ask Keith for the info on it as we talked before about local airfield history and he told me of this aircraft and I got the official Hendon report compiled by someone else so thats how I know.

Kind of took the fun out of guessing but I just though it would be good to be the knowledgable one for a change instead of the thinker.

cheers guys.

RE: Junkers JU 88

Merlin,I haven’t got a clue! I came across the JU 88 whilst doing some research into Mosquito registration codes. I thought as it was the Hendon JU 88 it might provoke some interest.
Having said that, I’m reading Rory Chisholm’s book Cover of Darkness. In it he describes how the boffins ‘bent the beam’, the beam being the German navigational beam. They would divert the bomber all over the place till the crew were convinced they been the England, bombed & then returned to France, Holland etc. The runway would be all nicely light up for them & there the German pilot would land the aircraft safely. This happened several times (how many he doesn’t say) & everytime the crew were convinced that they had returned safely home.

After that my copy of Action Stations 7 runs out of answers. Fascinated to hear the rest.

RE: Junkers JU 88

Hi guys

PJ876 or W/Nr 350043 with IV/NJG.3 coded D5 + EV

was captured at Dyce airfield on the 9th May 1943 and was taken over at 6.20 in the evening.

now some questions for you.

What squadron captured it?

how many aircraft were sent to intercept?

what happend to it before landing?

what aircraft intercepted it?

After being designated PJ876 why was it grounded?

and finally who on this forum knows more than most about this aircraft?

The last question is not me trying to be smug it is a real question as someone that uses this forum has worked on this aircraft at some point and to ask another question Where did they work on it?

In my worrying eagerness to be first with something can I offer…

2) TP190?

I was convinced I knew 1) as well. But my thought of Pembrey as the airfield where it landed in error turned out to be an FW190
