What were you doing on 9/11 when you heard the news???
I was buying a new TV in the shop, I thought it was some kind of demonstration, untill a crowd was forming around the Tele’s.

It was night time here..
..And it was late, around 11pm. I was on the computer in online discussion with friends with the TV on in the lounge behind me, when the news flash came up reporting the incident, and shortly after that the froum I was on went nuts with replys and questions. What a night! I was up till nearly 5am that next morning watching the disaster unfold LIVE. Luckily work for me started at 2pm the next day. I was in shock all day following and DIDN’T feel at all like working, but had to.
Something I certainly won’t forget!! My parents talk about the John.F.Kennedy assasination and how they can recall EXACTLY what they were doing and where they were. So, I guess the current younger generation have their own HORROR day in history as well now.

I rushed home as i worried for my relatives in New York who live on long island.

RE: Just …
I had been out shopping in Brugge and when I returned to my base I put the TV on to watch “Thunderbirds” which had been shown on the Flemish/Dutch channel. Instead I saw a burning skyscraper. At first I wondered what the hell it was, as I could not read the little caption on the screen from the distance I was standing with the remote control. When I read the caption and saw what was happening I won’t repeat what I said because I would probably be banned from the forum. Angry does not even come close. And when I found out later that people I knew had lost loved ones…

RE: Just …
I was watching Sky Sports News, waiting to see if Rangers FC were going to be made by UEFA to travel to face Anzhi Makhachkala.
Anyway, It came up as breaking news on the ticker that a plane had crashed into the WTC, and then host Dave Clark said reports were coming in of a second plane, hitting, and there would be more on Sky News. I thought it was a Cessna till I turned over later.
Anyway, I musta been really confused, coz I thought my dad would have been on the streets on Manhattan at the time. Obviously not, because three hours later, his BA flight from LHR landed at Halifax.

RE: Just … Get on or ignore each other
Actually Geforce, I have four years of French that I took and was very excited about learning a new language. I might begin taking it again next semester.
As far as me needing a brain I’d say I’ve got one and that it works quite well. Your problem about me not having a brain is a rather moot point as like I said, I’ve got one. Your problem is that you are way too cocky for your own good. And if you have nothing to prove as you clamin then why do many of your posts reflect a different story?
So you picked the wrong language to further insult me in. Perhaps Dutch would work better for you as I don’t know that language. I guess I must be pretty stupid for not being fluent in so many different languages.
Kev, you have some valid points, and I’ll have to think about it. Ignoring Geforce would probably be wise on my part.

RE: Just … Get on or ignore each other
To Geforce and Phantom.
This started off as a really interesting thread about what we were all doing on September 11th last year and our reactions to those terrible events. We have had many different perspectives, all of which enables us to get a better picture of the effect worldwide. Some people spoke movingly and passionately about how these events affected them.
What I don’t understand is why both of you always end up with any discussion involving the two of you descending into a slanging match? Both of you often have valid points and you both have the ability to express them clearly and passionately. You both should have the maturity to attempt to stay within the confines of the discussion so why can’t you?
RESPECT
1. To show or feel admiration or high regard for.
2. To show attention, consideration or thoughtfulness to.
Those are two definitons from Chambers Dictionary. Well, you say you have no respect for each other and those definitions prove it. I do my very best to respect other people’s point of view even if I do not agree with them. After all, people have died to ensure we have the freedom to have these discussions. Letting your disagreements descend to the level that you do gives no respect at all to those who died ensuring the right to freedom of speech.
As for myself, I’m getting fed up of your constant bickering and name-calling, it really is playground stuff. Both of you are better than that, your posts in the past have proved it, so, can we just try and get along? Please?

kev35

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-09-02 AT 08:38 PM (GMT)]My spelling is wrong. Sorry, Phantom. At least I’m doing some efforts to speak a foreign language. Have you ever tried speaking Dutch, French or German? Non, tu n’es comprend pas ce que je suis entrain de dire maintenant? Malchance, ce n’est pas mon problème que vous n’avez pas besoin de cervaux, mon copain. (Pour ceux qui parle le francais, ne traduisez pas svp }>)
Maybe you haven’t noticed yet, but not all people on this planet speak English.
I meant you are a #####, not a hippy.
I don’t have to prove anything. I just try to contribute to this forum, and though you don’t like me, that doesn’t necessairily mean others are alike.
BTW, I was not even trying to be funny. Why should I? I am deadly serious. Ever seen a hippy reading AFM, as you accused me of being a hippy.
Kevin,
I try to avoid him, but he always replies to my posts. Should I just let him telling things about me I have never said? Never had any problems with anyone on this board, but I ran out of patience. Now just look at the beginning of this thread. I even started this thread, but if some people are not mature enough to handle it in a civilised way, that’s not my problem. I’m just sick of him calling me a tree-hugger, cocky #####. I try to avoid the guy as much as possible these days, but I’m not planning to give him ‘carte blanche’. Anyway, I think I’m leaving the board for a while, not only because of Phantom. I hate having to defend myself for things I haven’t even said.

RE: Just …
Congratulations Geforce, your last post was nothing but crap. It didn’t even make sense and while some of it was meant to be funny it was simply not.
As far as me being a hippy? Where in the hell did you get that idea? I’m the farthest thing from one there is. You on the other hand fit the bill quite nicely.
As far as my respect for you goes, how can I lose it when I never had any respect for you to begin with.
And get your spelling right. It should be “boo-hoo”, not “boe-hoe”
And Geforce I’ve said it a hundred times, no you didn’t specifically say you were an expert on world politics, but your replies to various threads prove that you think you are. Which is of course a joke to me.
It’s like you are trying to prove something. You afraid Belgium and the EU don’t get the recognition they deserve or something? I just don’t get it.

RE: If I would get a nickle for each time I have to correct Phantom, I would be a billionaire by now
Hi, Merlin.
“Hate to tell you this but your thoughts are sick and so selfish. Should a nation suffer because of the actions of its government. The same goes for Iraq should the innocent suffer because of Saddam, No of course the shouldnt, but has Saddam not killed thousands of his own people and did he not take the aid given and use it for his soldiers and own men.”
No, of course a nation should not sufer for the actions of it’s Government but it is almost inevitable that they do. A couple of examples, Japan attacked Pearl Harbour and in the fullness of time received the gift of the first two atomic bombs. Didn’t hurt the Government, the Emperor remained, but sure as hell hurt the population. Germany started WWII and in the end hundreds of thousands of German civilians died. I trust you do not think that these two decisive episodes in our history were unnecessary?
“Before you all start calling me an American and alike I am actually Scottish and we have be hounded and slain by the English for hundreds of years but you dont see us ramming planes into English cities and I think we probably have more casue to.”
Do you? Perhaps as well you are a minority in your country as is evidenced by the sterling service the Scots Regiments have given to the British Army and the other armed services.
“I am not a killer and never have been although I am a trained killer courtesy of HM forces. I just think it is easy to take the lives of those who have wronged us.”
If you are so terribly anxious and offended by the wrong done to you by the English, why on earth did you join Her Majesty’s armed forces?
This is an open forum and as such everyone is entitled to their own opinion, whether we agree with it or not.

MERLIN ????????
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-09-02 AT 10:43 AM (GMT)]Hi Merlin,
Woow, calm down Man. I never said I enjoyed watching the planes crash into the WTC. That’s just spreading wrong information, I think you should first read and than respond. I agree with some points of what Primer said, but I think some how, he said it in a wrong way, he didn’t mean to, but this can happen. For non-native English speakers, it’s sometimes difficult to say what you really think. Happens a lot with me.
What Primer meant is that he hoped the US would understand the message and stop its unilateral policies in the middle east. At least that’s why I think.
I was also disgusted by how some others on the board reacted. Killing thousands of Iraqi’s to revenge on 3000 Americans, that’s not ver nice, is it? I hope you also try to look from the other side. Like Kevin said, not everything is black and white.
I wish people would read my posts first before they start accusing me of things I’ve never said. You even misspelled by name twice, it’s Geforce, not Geoforce. Proves how good you read the topic, and immediatelly started typing without thinking.
If you can find one single phrase where I said the attacks on the WTC are defendable, I’ll leave this board, as you wish. I said the attacks were somehow understandable, but below the belt as Mongu already stated before.

I say I don’t want to hear that from you, because you are one yourself }>.
Yeah, I am a hippy. Many hippies attend airshows and read AFM. Ever been to an airshow? Did you also notice the smell of pot around those plane-spotters }> :7.
And stop saying that I think I’m an expert on world politics. I am not, never said that. It’s only you who thinks that, you and your imaginary world.
Oh, this is a board, everybody has the right to say what he or she wants. But next time I start a new thread (a serious one), please don’t respond to it. There are enough other people who can do this, Vortex, Scooter, Tomcat.
BTW, Phantom, I hope you are not losing respect for me. Please, no!!!!! Don’t. Boe-hoe- 🙁 🙁 }>.

RE: Just …
Geforce, I’ve explained this a hundred times if I’ve explained it once. In the United States, a liberal is considered someone on the left end of the political spectrum while a conservative is someone on the right end of the spectrum. You for example would be hanging off the end of the left side while I would be on the right side.
As far as you being arrogant, cocky, narrow-minded, tree hugger, etc. I simply state the facts. As far as me being the last person you want to hear that from please explain why this is so?
As far as you being a hippie I don’t know about that but you could be considered a 21st century version of one minus the VW van and the pot (I’d hope).
But yes my friend, you would fit well with the hippies that I so hate. You are as liberal as they came. Such a shame….

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-09-02 AT 10:56 PM (GMT)]Hi Primer just few of my own comments about some of your comments
>I wasnt thinking about people dying.<
I think that you were plain NOT thinking when you posted this reply. What you should have thought about were all the innocent people dying because some dic*heads thought that it would help their cause. When all it really did was bring about the might of a few countries on their own people. I think that the majority of Afghans are now better off now than when the were under the Taliban (spelling) rule. Maybe you should take your own dic* out of you own a*s and you might start thinking staight or should that be out of you mouth as you sure cant talk that well either.
>Geforce,

>I have nothing to say ya but that I´m thank for helping me
>with my points and that you´re absolutely right in your
>points.
Yeah only thanking him cause he could see what you were saying. I could see what you were saying also and agree in some respect Americans do need to be told about some things about the way the handle things or the way they do things. But the difference in me saying this is that the only way to do these things are over a table and a good drink. Flying a plane into the tallest building in NYC is not the way to do things you only get people annoyed and angry and forgive me if I think that haveing some pride in your own nation is a bad thing. I think that the American Eagle pulled not just Americans together in the dark days after but also pulled support from all over the world.I think this showed when even old American enemies were sending messages of help and their sorrow of what had happened.
>PhantomII,

>There were many acts that your government did that sickened

>position in Kyoto conference. Add this to what Geforce,
>Vortex and I have already said and I guess you´ll can see my

Hate to tell you this but your thoughts are sick and so selfish. Should a nation suffer because of the actions of its government. The same goes for Iraq should the innocent suffer because of Saddam, No of course the shouldnt, but has Saddam not killed thousands of his own people and did he not take the aid given and use it for his soldiers and own men.
Before you all start calling me an American and alike I am actually Scottish and we have be hounded and slain by the English for hundreds of years but you dont see us ramming planes into English cities and I think we probably have more casue to.Realistically if you put the Terrorist infront of me and gave me a gun filled with bullets I would take the bullets out of the gun and bash their heads in until the were dead just to save the exspense of firing a round. This is my beliefs , ALL LIFE is sacred and let those who take a life perish by their own means, MURDER. and this is to mild a word for what they did. I wish we had the death sentance in Britain and this is often a topic in my workplace. I was once asked what I would do to people like the Killer of the recent case of the two girls who went missing and all of those before them. I said quite calmly I would be their executioner. I was then asked realy could I stand the though of taking a life in cold blood like that I said yes and the person talking said they could never do this and I said it was easy.
I am not a killer and never have been although I am a trained killer courtesy of HM forces. I just think it is easy to take the lives of those who have wronged us. I will never forget that day and anyone who can comment like Primer did and anyone who can support his post like Geoforce did does not deserve a place in this forum.
Geoforce I thought your original topic was agood one until I say your support for Primer then that thought went out the window.

Phantom, why do you always have to ruin a perfect thread by insulting me, calling me cocky ##### and so on. Really, if I am one (most likely }>) than you are the last person I want to hear that from.
Ohh, and last remark: why do you always think of liberals as lefties? What kind of pot-smoking, sheep-clothes wearing , VW-mini-van-driving hippy do you take me for ????!!!!!! Do you really think I’m one of those idiots. Boy, wake up.
The only leftist in Europe is Blair, and actually he’s the only one supporting Bush. Explain that to me. I ask you friendly, because my knowlegde on world politics is way too small. You, on the other hand, could learn me something. Now is the time Phantom.

RE: Just …
>I fully understand that many people have a
>right to hate my nation.
If you can see that, than perhaps you can also see why people actually exploit that right? Perhaps a good step in the direction of understanding, rather than communication through explosives.
Anyway…
On 9/11 i was at work, doing some low-priority job and still sobbing for becoming single again two weeks earlier. At a certain stage, phones began ringing here in the editorial office of the newspaper where i work, and suddenly things started happening fast. By then only one aircraft had flown into one of the towers, and that´s all what was known. Rumours were buzzing, somebody called to the other side of the room “What´s actually going on with them skyscrapers in New York? Is a giant ape standing on one of them?”
In the mean time, i began opening up all possible newswires and other sources of info, and started typing like hell (i´m an internet editor). By the time i had a small article on the first plane -i still considered it a very weird accident- on-line, the second one flew in. Ah, that doesn´t look like an accident. That seems more like a deliberate action. From then, it all got completely frantic. Thankfully two colleagues arrived very, very soon but still it was one continuous wave of incoming rumours (Flight 93 shot down! More aircraft missing!),news, scavenging for pictures…
Only when i got home (actually i was kicked out by the chief editor, he wanted people to be awake the next few days as well) i got the chance to be shocked. Only then did i realise that thousands of people died, that the US finally was confronted by the fact that many people across the world don´t like the US bombing around unpunished, and the sheer magnitude of the attacks. Later still i came to realise the heroism involved – both from the people of the NYPD and NYFD but equally so on the terrorist´s side: i consider hijacking an aircraft and then fly it into a building on a similar level of heroism as the VT-8 raid during the Battle of Midway, for example. Disregarding the goals achieved, of course.
I have to admit that the responses of the US government in the aftermath of the attacks kind of relieved me. Probably because i had little respect for most of the Bush administration, i was afraid that the US would retaliate in some kind of berserk and totally unfounded manner (more or less in the similar rage as Phantom II feels) and would quickly reform itself into a fascistoid security-paranoid and arabophobic state. Although i don´t support the US actions, i have to admit that i expected it to be far worse. (And now i have this off my chest, i will continue my rantings on US foreign policy as ever before of course 😀 )

RE: Just …
Kev, you make a very good point. Perhaps you could rub off a bit on Geforce. I fully understand that many people have a right to hate my nation. But, Geforce telling me not to end up like Tim McVeigh just because I said I would like to kill those who are part of 9/11 is just going too far.

RE: Cocky, arrogant, etc.
Hi, PII.
“And excuse me if I want to kill those who’ve done my country harm.”
An understandable attitude to have. And if you do hold this attitude surely you can appreciate other people holding that same attitude towards the United States for the same reason? Don’t get me wrong, this was a despicable act and the perpetrators should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. I just think it’s important to remember there are two sides to every story. Nothing is ever black and white anymore, just a million shades of grey.

kev35

I was reading ceefax on BBC1 at my sister’s house and the words “we are going over to the BBC News Room” caught my attention.
Switched back to the TV and they showed footage of the towers.
