"Just Jane" at 65

Happy 65th to Just Jane / Guy Gibson / Spirit of Surfer’s Paradise/ G-ASXX / WU15 / NX611. It’s been a long time since I last looked at the airframe logbook but ISTR that 16 April 1945 was either date of construction or first flight.

Happy Birthday anyway.

I found an interesting article from an old copy of the Air Cadet magazine dated October 1965.

It covers the ferry flight of NX611 to Biggin Hill and an article about PA747’s adoption by the BBMF.

See the attched J pegs

I’d have thought probably not as NX611 wasn’t the only Lancaster or Lancastrian to fly to the far side of the world – W4783 G-George flew to Australia from the UK in 1944.

I’m not sure how many legs the NX611 flight from Sydney to the UK took in but I know the total flight time was 70 hours over 9 days, whereas the longest single operational flight of a Lancaster was over 10 hours. I’m also not sure if the extended range ‘saddle tank’ lancasters or the flight refuelling experimental Lancasters ever flew any seriously long flights, but they did go to India and I think also Australia and it could be that those legs were the longest flown. We shouldn’t forget PD328 Aries either – round the world flights, visits to N & S America and over both poles in 44 and 45.

re;

When she came home, possibly the longest flight that a lancaster has ever taken?

She’s had a hell of a history, thanks for mentioning this RB. In recognition of this I shall use a slightly less bright red next time i accuse you of being a Doomster! 😉
