Do you remember not only the distinctive shape of the Javelin but also its distinctive sound. Here are six views to remind you.
1 Javelin FAW1 7558M ex XA544 at St. Athan ?
2 A Javelin flying at Farnboro
3 FAW1 7470M ex XA553 gateguard at Stanmore Park on 25/06/83
4 Javelin coded F
5 FAW1 XA969
6 FAW1 XA549 coded E
If anyone can provide further information I will be grateful.

Hi,
Excellent thread and some great photos. It’s nice to see that the Javelin is remembered by those that saw it and that it brings back fond memories.
I am actually gathering material for a book on the Javelin so if anyone can help with stories/anecdotes/photos I would be very grateful. I think the Javelin is one of those classic British aircraft that is well remembered but there is very little written about it. I hope to put that right.
Regards,
Alex

IIRC there were a pile of them scrapped at RAF Shawbury in about ’61-63 ish?
I certainly remember the ‘blue note’ they made?
Any sound/film files coming up folks?

Belated thanks to Glyn for posting those excellent Javelin photos, especially the rarely seen AFDU aircraft. They rang a bell and when I checked my old spotters notes I found I had recorded XA547 on St Athan dump in April 1962, along with XA619 ex-87 Sqn and XA809 ex-46 Sqn. I remember being shocked that they were scrapping Javelins already! My father would not let me take photos at the rather public dump but I did take the attached shots of 29 Sqn Javelin FAW.6s at a more discrete location ’round the back’. XA817/E, XA818/B, XH699/L and XH700/A. These and all the ‘Dragmasters’ on the dump were sold for scrap later in the year.
At the time I lived under the extended centre-line of Leconfield’s main runway and well remember laying in bed listing to that wonderful howl from 72 sqn’s javelin’s as they recovered after night exercises. Oh to hear it again ….

There were some at North Luffenham but it was a few years back. A picture of our JP XS186 at NL has a firestreak under the wing sitting on a trolley.

Hello all,
Wonder if anyone out there can help me find a Firestreak missile or two for my Lightning nose/cockpit? Im here because Javelin’s were the first to sport them were they not!
Thanks , Neil

Very true but this is the only way I get to fly Javelins, Gannets, Lightnings and other splendid toys.
Try it with Combat Flight Simulator, it is great fun turning up for a WWII bombing mission with a B52 or A10 Warthog
Better still is using a Lightning for strafing missions, and Airwolf for ground attack! confuses the hell out if the FW190s and BF109s

Here’s another one for the collection. XH909 at the Battle of Britain display at RAF Finningley, September 1966. A rather murky day, it was.

I flew one out of Liverpools EGGP this morning… flew under the Runcorn bridge, demolished Wales, and was home in time for tea’n’biccies.

Have you got any of the Javellin that used to be at Manston – I used to spend hours clambering around undernreath it when i was a kid. What happened to it? – did it end up on the fire dump?
You mean this one?
