Just saw a B-29 Land!!!!

Just had the pleasure of see the lone last survivng B-29, “FIFI”
land here in Greenville, South Carolina USA. Nice to see the old girl on a tour for perhaps the last time, members of The Commerative AirForce say with rising cost, insurance and age this aircraft may be grounded soon. The Superfortress made a wonderful smooth landing at the former Donaldson Air Force base, which at one time had B-25’s here during World War II. A P-51 Mustang and SBD Dauntless also will make an apperance, for $750 dollars , one can take a thirty minute flight in the P-51. I am so tempted to take a spin in that Mustang!!!!! Its a wonderful treat to hear those radials working in 20004, just got an early christmas present in April !

May just take a spin in that P-51!

Well thanks for the encouragement guys, I just may try this weekend to see if this is for real. Information came from an aritcle in the local paper. I have flow on “The Diamond Lil” the B-24 and the B-17 “Sentimental Journey”, would love to add a P-51 to the list. Now if its a BlueNose P-51, well the old wallet may have to come open ! Even just to hear her crank up that lovely Merlin is worth the experience !

$750 for a 30 minute flight in the Mustang is a good deal. Crazy Horse is $1950 for a 30 minute and $2750 for the hour long “orientation” flight. Training and checkout are just over $3K/hr, so I would say this is a very good deal.

See if the plane has a stick in the jump seat, he may let you do some flying at altitude. The only thing better than riding in a Mustang is getting to fly one.

Be careful, you may have to have one after the ride. 😀

Been lucky enough to see Fifi fly before myself – amazing sight to see.

Boeing is heavily sponsoring and providing many of the facilities in which to restore a B-29 back to flying condition. The project has made steady progress over the last few years and is shaping up to be one of the most amazing restoration stories in a long time. With the plane being rebuilt to factory specs by a huge team of skilled volunteers it is a safe bet that we should have a B-29 in the air for many years.

I know Fifi was grounded with some bad engine troubles over the last year or so and the costs to get her back in the air were staggering. I certainly hope the CAF guys can keep her up for a while – would love to see a 2 ship of B-29s make a low pass over an airshow!

Kermit Weeks has a bunch of B-29 stuff, maybe 1 1/2 planes worth. Maybe he’ll get around to getting his up some day….

I shall be visiting Oshkosh this year and would be more than delighted if I could see “Fifi” there, is there any chance of that, does anyone know?
One of my most abiding memories is seeing the American B-50s trundling around the taxiway at RAF Waddington in the very early 1950s as a child there, what a contrast with their sleek lines and deep-throated rumble to the angular and deafening Lincolns.
Incidentally around that time a Lincoln just missed our house on the AMQ patch and crashed on the rubbish dump between the RAF station and the village, does anyone have any details? I’ll never forget the crew running away from the aircraft across the wheat field towards our house, but fortunately it didn’t catch fire and the remains were eventually removed. It must have been around 1952.
I was one of the “got any gum, chum” generation (sweet rationing was till on) and another clear memory is of the fantastic Christmas party with the Yanks there, we all got wonderful presents; at that time of austerity in the UK the Americans showed such incredible friendliness and generosity that we kids thought they were from another world, which in a sense they were.

Go for it Bluenoser! 🙂

You never know if you’ll get a chance like that again!

Glad you’ve got some Warbirds in your neck of the woods. And the last airworthy B29 too!

It would be a shame if ‘FIFI’ was grounded but I guess a plane that is as rare & complex as the B29 takes that much more time, money and effort to keep operational.

Lets just hope it continues for a few more years yet though!

Cheers

Paul
