Just seen on TV news – Pioneer Aero and OFMC Yak3

I was just watching TV3 news. There was an excellent report on the Pioneer Aero restoration team at Ardmore, Auckland, NZ.

Lots of footage of the OS&RC (formerly OFMC’s) P40E with Ray Hanna at the controls, flying with Garth Hogan’s P40N. Garth was interviewed about the efforts they go to to restore aircraft and he was saying more and more airframes are now being brought to New Zealand because of the expertise here, and the better costs.

Also there was some gorgeous ground footage and air to air shots of pilot Frank Parker taking Ray Hanna’s newly restored Yak 3 for a flight. It looks stuinning, the most appealling scheme I have seen on a Yak. It has a swatztika right up by the cowl, and rows and rows of red stars under the canopy – I wonder what they denote.

I wish I’d taped it.

Also just before that on the news, a report marking 65 years since the first commercial trans-Tasman crossing by the TEAL Short Empire flying boats. It took ten hours and in real terms tickets cost 30 times the amount they do now! Some nice old photos were shown.

One time in Russian AF at 3rd Fighter Air Corps was emblem – swasztic splitted by sword on half-and-half – there can be that emblem on nose of OFMS Yak?

Actually, yes – come to think of it, there was something painted over the swatztika, so that must be it. It must be the unit marking. Thanks Oleg

Thanks Oleg, that makes sense. This aircraft’s colour scheme must have been that of a great pilot then, as there are many rows of red stars (plus the one swatztika on the nose!?).

In Russian AF drew the small stars on number of shot down enemy airplanes, but swazticks did not draw never, because Germans killed in Russia so much people, that the hatred to swazticks was very great. Therefore it was accepted to draw stars as a mark shot down enemy airplanes

Dave, the red stars probably denote the aircraft shot down by the pilot, although why the are represented as stars and not swastikas ,somebody else could answer that.I did not see the news article but saw some shorts later in the evening.Looks good doesnt it!?
